"We'll talk later," Pike had said, four days ago (by the calendar; it felt more like four weeks plus or minus a year). Apparently, the fact that he's still basically in traction and restrained hasn't stopped now from being 'later.'
McCoy knows he's ankle-deep in shit of his own making here, and yeah, it's probably at least a little mitigated by the fact that Jim, being completely bugfuck insane not only went to get the man, but got pretty much beaten to a pulp doing so and still also saved Earth (not to mention the microsurgery, but that'd be blowing his own horn), so he's more than a little uncomfortable. Still, he's not about to fidget. He stands with his arms folded across his chest and waits to hear how badly he's fucked up his brand new career.
Pike looks at him for a long moment, during which McCoy can't help but notice he's still a bit flushed; maybe he needs something else for fever.
"You took full responsibility," Pike finally says.
"Still do. Let's have it."
Pike sighs. "You know if I write up anything like the truth, they're going to come up with a hundred and fifty forms, and there will be a hearing, and then, I don't know, do they do demerits in the med school?"
"They do." McCoy grimaces; he'd rather not be the guy who mops up drunk coeds (other then Jim, which is a given) for the next five years.
Pike grimaces back. "Shit. If I let you off, well what kind of precedent is that?"
"Lousy." McCoy shrugs. "Don't have to decide right now. That Scott guy says we're still about a week from the ass end of nowhere."
Pike grins, which is a little unexpected, but McCoy's also sure it's a little more toward evil than cheerful. "Great. You can just keep considering the error of your ways."
McCoy rolls his eyes. "You do know I'm not twenty-two, right?"
"Which I am definitely holding against you. Old enough to know better."
"Perfect." McCoy watches the blood pressure readouts and shakes his head. "And you're due for another stint with the regenerator. Good thing I'm not the type to attach the quality of your treatment to anything."
"That a threat?"
"Hell, no. If I wanted to make a threat, I'd make one. Which would be idiotic in this instance. Now, come on." McCoy helps Pike shift into position and rolls his eyes again. Jim owes him so, so many drinks.
