I adored this, the bittersweet quality of it, the hope, the reality of a Starfleet beyond the Enterprise, the serious attention paid (without harping) to the practicalities of McCoy's fear of flying. And the sex, of course. Great stuff. It's a keeper. :-) The only negative for me was that it didn't hook me until Bones was actually on the shuttle, which makes me question whether the back-story stuff couldn't have been worked in slightly later somehow.
I agree with you that it's info-dump-y up top. Had I not been a lot further behind than I wanted to be, I probably would have made the same change, and I even considered hacking off a bunch of the top, except I was afraid without time to do it well I would just lose something that would wind up being confusing. But yes, I see your point, and I'm glad you kept reading. :)
*GRIN* Finally finished reading this and totally loved it. Your Jim here would totally steal my heart. If Bones hadn't already fallen hard, there's no way he could've resisted.
I enjoyed their letters, and especially that Jim was so slow in owning up to what they both wanted, but then he jumped in with both feet. Very much Jim Kirk.
The tale is a bit bittersweet in that they found each other when it was too late to be together, but it's obvious that state of affairs won't last long.
