The morning starts normally.

Pause, rewind, scratch that. The morning does not start normally, because Olive's in bed alone and, in her half-asleep state, thinks she hears a rattle under the bed. Then immediately forgets she heard anything, even though snakes in the tropics are a totally valid concern. She's less of a fan of sleeping alone these ( Read more... )

Eduardo is half-awake when he first hears it, but that doesn't last long when he realizes what it is: a scream, distinctly female, and close enough for it to reach him at all, which means there's only one place it could be coming from. Not for the first time, he's unbelievably fucking grateful that Olive lives so near him. He's been protective of her since the night she showed up on the beach, but never before has he had a reason to worry quite like this, the sound a clear sign of some sort of trouble. It doesn't matter, then, what it is or why, or that he's only half-dressed, or that it's unlikely he would be able to do much anyway. Instinct kicks in, and then he's out the door, closing the distance between their huts as quickly as he can ( ... )

There really isn't anything they can do to her, Olive tells herself, they're just toys. Except it's hard to remember that when they're moving under their own steam and the goddamn bear is armed, which conspires to leave her both frightened and irate, because she's being threatened by her own toy with her own scissors. Maybe there shouldn't be any reason to be afraid, but given where they are and that this is happening at all, she's not taking any chances ( ... )

To Eduardo, it doesn't matter what the circumstances are. What matters is that she's still alright, that there's anything trying to hurt her at all, that he find a way into the goddamn house before any harm can come to her. He'd never forgive himself otherwise and he knows it, but for the moment, he's trying not to give that too much consideration. There's no need to yet when she's still able to yell to him, a fact that's counterintuitively relieving. Thinking on that, though, is what finally gives him an idea. The door might be barred, but the windows aren't; that's part of why the sound is able to carry so well, how it reached him in his hut. Maybe it's cliché, but he doesn't give a fuck. It's an option, and the only one he's got ( ... )

"Eduardo! Oh, my God -" The minute she sees him, Olive scrambles forward over the bed, meaning to jump down and run over to him. She's stopped, though, by the clatter of hooves, turning in surprise to find the panda's mounted one of the unicorns and is riding at her with her scissor's like a lance. For a moment, her panic and concern is subdued by bewilderment, because it would be kind of cute if it weren't a) clearly demonic and b) happening, and then the unicorn rears back to leap up and at her. Rather than defend herself properly, she reacts by simply lashing out, too stunned to think clearly about this. It's enough to send it off course, at least, and bear and steed crash into the wall ( ... )
