It's not the first time Olive's seen Chris since she talked to Claire, and she's wanted so many times to ask him about the possible break up or whatever it was that happened. Claire was clear on her reasoning and vague on everything else, and given the conversation at the time, it just made sense to Olive not to push her, and besides, she wants to ( Read more... )

When Olive walks in, Chris is fuckin' surrounded by carnival prizes. Somehow, when the carnival was round, he managed to play enough games and win enough times that he's got enough prizes to make a decent pile. And that pile of prizes have given Chris what he's convinced is an amazing idea.

"No, no, something loads better than that," he says, expression brightening, "Guess."

Olive takes a breath, walking around to look at them all, the amazing mountain of toys. "You're... I don't know, gonna give them out on Christmas dressed as Santa," she says, having no idea whatsoever. They're awesome, and whatever Chris has come up with is sure to be fantastic, though. "What, what is it?"

"Three words, Olive," Chris says, and proceeds to count them all out on his fingers, "Halloween. Tony's party. Lady Gaga. Okay, so maybe that's five words, but fuck it, it's gonna be brilliant."

Come to think of it,this might be the best idea Chris has ever had.

Olive's ready to point out it's more like three phrases, but a) he covers it himself and b) the image hits her all at once and the details don't really matter. Sure, it's not all one creature like the Kermit dress, but there was that Hello Kitty one, right? Whatever, it's so Gaga that the first thing that happens is she bursts out laughing.

"Yes!" she says, heading to crouch down among the stuffed animals with him. "Oh, my God, Chris, that's genius. So you're, like, gonna sew this all into a dress?"

"Yeah, exactly! See, I saw this thing in a magazine, yeah?" Chris says, and starts to look for the magazine he'd found on the bookshelf with the picture in it, only the floor's covered with stuffed prizes and he can't manage to locate it.

"It's here... somewhere. I haven't worked out how exactly to do it, though."

Starting to turn animals over, Olive joins the hunt. "Well, I mean, it's probably way more complicated than it looks," she says, "just to get it to keep its shape and all, but it's totally doable. Or something close. I'd have to find the picture... But I could help, I bet we could figure it out." She's pretty good at this stuff, and making a Gaga dress would be a total challenge, which she's more than up for. Even with schoolwork to keep her busy, she needs a change of pace now and then.

"I was just gonna like... go for it, I guess," Chris replies, because he hadn't really had a plan for it, really. He'd figured that once you got them all attached, he'd just be able to put it on.

"I mean, you've just got to get them all attached and you're halfway there, right?"

"Yeah, pretty much," Olive says. "They just have to be attached in, you know... like, a dress shape. But that shouldn't be that hard, it's just a lot of hand-stitching. And maybe, like, a lining under it all so there aren't gaps people can just see through. Mm, maybe if I start with a basic shift and then sew the animals directly onto that, they'll hold better..." She's mostly talking to herself now, holding up a few of the different creatures as she plans the project in her head. If she can find some kind of wiring to give the skirt shape... "God, your costume idea is way better than mine. I'm just going as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz."

"See? This is why I need you," Chris nearly exclaims, because he hasn't thought through any of that; not that there'd be gaps in the animals or the thing she's said about lining or whatever. He's only good for the costume idea.

"D'you mean the one with the little dog?" He's not all that familiar with The Wizard of Oz, but he thinks he at least knows that much. And something about a field full of drugs.

"Yeah, that one," Olive says, cheerful. It's hard not to be when people say things like that, and anyway, she's getting used to people not being as familiar with various movies as she is. Eduardo's had a lot of catching up to do. "With like, the dress and the pigtails and the sparkly shoes and then Duckie can be the dog. But my dress is done, so I can totally help with yours if you want."

It gives her something to do that's also kind of a challenge. Really she's itching to do it.

"Oh, that's brilliant," Chris says, only isn't she also supposed to have a lion and a robot go along with her or something? Fuck it, Olive knows what she's doing better than he does.

"You'd help? That'd be amazing, really. I mean, I was gonna give it a go, but I'd probably be shit at it in the end."

"No, it'd be fine," Olive tells him, and she honestly kind of wishes she could see how it would play out in the end, whatever Chris would have made. It might not have held together very well, but it probably would have been amazing in its own trainwreck way. "But yeah, I'd love to help. It'd be fun, I've never made a dress of stuffed animals before. I should get your measurements later. Good thing I dropped in. I was only coming to see how things are going."

"You'd better be careful, Olive, I dunno what Wardo'll think about you 'taking my measurements'," Chris jokes, looking up from digging through the pile of stuffed animals for his comment.

"I think we all already know your measurements," Olive deadpans, wincing slightly, if playfully. She got to her feet as she spoke, looking around the room for a piece of paper and a pen so she could make note of her ideas. "He's not worried."

Suddenly, something comes to Chris that he hasn't thought of, and he pops up out of the pile of animals to dash into the next room. When he comes back, he's got the magazine with the photo of Lady Gaga in it.

"It was under the mattress the whole time, apparently," he says.

Once she realizes what's happened, Olive starts laughing. "Perfect, thank you," she says, taking the magazine to get a better look at the picture. What it was doing under Chris's mattress, god only knows. She's sure plenty of weird things end up there eventually anyway. "God, this is going to be so fun. Do you have a pen or something?"
