if you spend your days longing for things you can never have, you'll miss the ones you can

an: another round of apologies for this one. I honestly didn't want it to end, that coupled with my home life just kept putting this off. again, for those who missed the note last time, I decided to end it here without adding more of what I'd previously wanted because I didn't want to add more drama. additionally, the previously promised dooseung was scheduled to occur in the part that was cut out, so that won't be happening. again, apologies. anyway, this is too long of an author's note for my liking, so let's just get on with it. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I loved writing it, and I hope to continue writing for the fandom in the future. :)

It's another three weeks of this behavior before Junhyung and Doojoon finally decide to throw down. It's five in the morning and Hyunseung wakes up to their voices, raised, but he's already decided that anything can be heard through these walls. Doojoon has walked in on them twice since that first time, and it's causing Hyunseung to try and be as quiet as possible, much to Junhyung's displeasure. And no amount of pleading and begging can get Hyunseung in Junhyung's bedroom if he knows Doojoon is also in bed.

Hyunseung attempts to get up from Junhyung's bed, but finds himself promptly on the floor in a tangled pile of sheets, otherwise naked, and nursing a bump to the head where it connected with the floor.

He only barely manages to get himself into his clothes from the previous night before he's opening the front door of Junhyung's apartment. He immediately pulls it mostly shut again, though, once he really hears the fight going on in the hallway between the two apartments.

"... should have been over months ago," Doojoon's voice carries past the partially open door.

"Yeah, well, it's not," Junhyung replies, and Hyunseung can almost see the look of boredom on his face.

"It's that exact god-damned attitude that I'm talking about."

"You know what? Forget this. I'm going back to bed."

"Oh, I'm sure you'd just love that."

"He would, too."

"That's why it has to end, Junhyung."

Hyunseung's brow wrinkles in confusion as he hears Junhyung sigh. The conversation sounds way to comfortable to be real.

"It's not going to end," Junhyung finally replies, his voice flat.

"That wasn't the plan."

"I don't give a rat's ass about the plan anymore."

"Should have known bringing you into it would be a bad idea."

"Then why did you?"

"Because I thought you'd just... distract him," Doojoon all but bursts, the volume of his voice causing Hyunseung to flinch. "Continue inviting him over. Take him out. Help him make friends. Was that so hard? Can you do anything without involving your dick?"

"I didn't just fuck him," Junhyung's voice raises, as well, and Hyunseung starts putting the right pieces in the right places. They're talking about him. "The thought hadn't even crossed my mind until it happened."

"I'd be an idiot to believe that."

"You're an idiot, anyway. You don't have to believe me to prove that."

"Whatever. Just stop it now, before it gets bad."

"Who says it's going to get bad?"

"Please. Like I don't know your track record."

"You're one to talk, really."

"I'm in a committed relationship," Doojoon points out.

"Really? So am I."

Doojoon's laugh fills the hallway. Hyunseung frowns. He feels like this isn't a conversation he should be listening to, but, at the same time, he knows it's about him, so he can't hide his curiosity.

"I fail to see the humor," Junhyung's monotone cuts into the barking laughter.

"And he feels the same way?" Doojoon asks. "That was the goal, wasn't it?"

"I don't understand."

"To take advantage of him and keep him around until you're done with him."

"It's nothing like that. I've already told you-"

"I heard what you said."

"This is stupid. Really. Can I just go back to sleep?"

"Not until you tell me you're going to break it off."

"That's not going to happen."

"He's my best friend. I don't-"

"You're like a broken record," Junhyung cuts him off, his voice raising again. "I get it. You're concerned. Listen to me," he pauses, making sure Doojoon is actually listening to him. "I'm going back inside my apartment. I'm going to get back into my bed, with my boyfriend, and get some more sleep, because it's five in the fucking morning. If you still have something up your ass about it later, drop in, but it is seriously way too early for this."

Hyunseung takes a step back in a panic as he hears Junhyung moving toward the door. He's not really sure what to do with himself.

"Hey," Doojoon barks, moving closer, as well. There's a scuffle just outside the door, no doubt Doojoon making a grab at Junhyung to stop him and Junhyung attempting to avoid it. The result, however, is Doojoon shoving Junhyung into the door, trying to assert some level of authority, but the door was left open, and when Junhyung's weight hits it, he goes right to the floor without time to try and break his fall. All three of them hear his head hit the hard floor and the two left standing wince.

Doojoon's eyes move quickly to where Hyunseung is standing, suddenly looking as if he was caught doing something he shouldn't. "Seung."

Junhyung groans, but rolls slightly to follow Doojoon's gaze. He doesn't look quite so guilty, but still surprised.

"Seung," Doojoon repeats, stepping over Junhyung and further into the room. "How long were you-?"

"What plan?" Hyunseung manages to force out, saying the first thing that comes to his mind.

"That's not important," Doojoon starts. "Come home with me. We'll-"

"What plan?" Hyunseung repeats, louder. His gaze darts from Doojoon to Junhyung, who is trying to pick himself up from the floor.

Doojoon's hands are on his arms before he knows what's happening. He tries to pull away but Doojoon just pulls him closer. "Listen. It was for your own good. It wasn't to hurt you."

"To get me out of your hair."

"Not at all."

"No, you'd say it with prettier words, sugar-coated to make me feel better."

"What did you want me to do?" Doojoon suddenly yells. "You were drunk. You told me you loved me."

"What? When?"

"Like a year ago."

Hyunseung is too shocked to say anything, his body almost going limp as he stares at his best friend. There's no way. He can't remember anything like that. He pulls against his hold again, but Doojoon is set on keeping him in place. "I never..." he starts, trying to pull back again.

"You did," Doojoon cuts him off, his no-nonsense tone firm as he keeps his eyes on his best friend. "You were loud. He heard it, too," he informs him, jerking his head in the direction of Junhyung.

Hyunseung's eyes shift to Junhyung, panicked and curious and just wanting to get to the bottom of it all.

Junhyung isn't looking at him, but at his own feet.

"Junhyung?" Hyunseung's voice comes out far weaker than he would have liked.

"You were drunk," Junhyung mimics Doojoon's own words, his eyes finally moving up to settle on the older pair. "It was a long time ago. I didn't know either of you."

"So you knew?"

"Of course I knew. Everyone knew. Even the idiot knew," Junhyung replies, obviously referring to Doojoon by the way his intent glare settled on him.

"And that's why you helped me?" Hyunseung asks, cutting off Doojoon, who had started to protest.

"No," Junhyung says quickly, attempting to take a step closer, but stopping abruptly when his head swims from the hit it took when connecting to the floor. "I helped you because I wanted to. Even if this asshole hadn't come over here a few months after we started hanging out, begging me to get you off his hands, I would have helped you."

"Say one more thing-" Doojoon starts, turning to move over to the other, but Hyunseung takes the opportunity to pull away from his best friend completely.

Hyunseung brings a hand up, pushing Doojoon back before he can get any closer to either of them. "So what was the plan?"

"His plan," Junhyung corrects as he moves to sit down on the couch once his body can handle the spinning room. "Was for me to keep you around until you came to your senses and realized he was a perfect jerk and found something better." He pauses and grins when he sees the look of hatred on Doojoon's face. "Maybe not in those words, but that's how I took it."

"Why?" Hyunseung asks, directing the question at his roommate, even though his body is shifting toward the couch, as well.

"Are you serious?" Doojoon replies once he's sure nobody is going to cut him off again. "Why would you want to get mixed up with someone like me?"

"You're my best friend," Hyunseung says simply. "How would it be any different?"

"You wanted me to use you and throw you out?" Doojoon asks, his voice raising again. "You know how I am. Honestly, I can't believe you've lived with me this long but still wanted to be with me. I've done nothing to show that I have any sort of understanding of how relationships work. How did you even come up with a fantasy where I was a decent person?"

Hyunseung doesn't respond, he can't respond, because he knows that Doojoon is right. He was a fool and always knew it, but now he was aware that Doojoon, the man that he'd thought he'd loved, knew it, too. His gaze is focused on the floor somewhere near his roommate's feet, unable to come up with a single thing to say in his own defense.

"You're too good for that," Doojoon adds after what feels like an eternity of silence.

"What about your boyfriend?" Hyunseung finally finds his voice, but still can't quite meet the other man's eyes. "He's good enough for you. And you told me he was just like me."

"That's just a coincidence, Seung," Doojoon explains with a sigh. "I care about you both, but in different ways."

Hyunseung sinks slowly, sitting on the couch as he continues to stare holes into the floor. He can feel Junhyung shift beside him, but doesn't take the time to look over.

"I didn't want to lose you as my best friend," Doojoon continues, his tone finally calmed. "I still don't. The last few months have been amazing. I finally feel like everything is as it should be." When Hyunseung doesn't respond, Doojoon sighs again. "You have to understand. I know you're not stupid." When it becomes obvious that Hyunseung no longer feels the need to contribute to the conversation, Doojoon simply moves to leave, pausing by the open door to look into the apartment at them once more. "Come home when you're ready to talk."

Junhyung watches Doojoon leave, glad that the older man spares a thought to close the front door. He didn't want to have to move again. Neither he nor Hyunseung speak for minutes, both willing to allow the heavy silence to just sit around them like it belonged there. It isn't until he feels Hyunseung's fingers intertwine with his own that he has even the slightest idea of what to say.

"You're still here," he finally manages, looking over at his neighbor. "It sounded like you might still want to convince him to be with you."

"You called me your boyfriend," Hyunseung replies, but doesn't meet his gaze.

"You caught that."

"I caught a lot of it. I liked that part."

"So you're not going after him?"

"Why do you always ask that? If I was planning to go, I would have."

Junhyung is quiet for a moment, long enough for Hyunseung to finally look over at him. "Because I'm in love with you, and seeing you in love with him hurts."

"You told me you'd never say that. Said it makes you feel uncomfortable."

"I'm not uncomfortable. There's nothing uncomfortable about being in love with you."

"I'm not in love with him," Hyunseung says after another pause, grinning, though mostly to himself.

"What?"

"I haven't been for a while. I realized it a few weeks ago. I'm surprised you didn't know, too. You always know everything I feel before I do."

Junhyung simply grins at that, tightening his fingers around the other's. "So I should stop worrying?"

"It took less than two months to get me to fall out of love with him," Hyunseung starts, shifting closer to the other on the couch. "Was that in the plan?"

"His plan sucked from the start," Junhyung replies with a short laugh. "I liked my plan more."

"Which was?"

"To see you naked."

"What?" Hyunseung squawks, attempting to pull his hand away from the other, but gets pulled into Junhyung's lap instead.

"Well, it worked, didn't it? I didn't even have to say I loved you first. You're so easy."

"You're a bastard."

"I'm a bastard," Junhyung agrees, nodding before pressing a brief kiss to the other's lips. "But you're still here."

Hyunseung shifts, moving until he's comfortable in the other's lap, facing him. "Only as long as you can deal with my jerk of a best friend."

"I think I'm going to move my bedroom to the other side of the apartment," Junhyung decides with another nod. "Yoseob moved out months ago. And I'm starting to think I really hate hearing your jerk of a best friend's voice. I don't have to hang out with him, do I?"

"No."

"Good."

"Not as long as you don't care about seeing me naked ever again."

Junhyung is quiet for a moment before he's unable to hold his laughter in anymore. It takes a few minutes before he can calm himself down enough to speak again. "You're a bastard, too," he finally mutters, only partially cut-off when Hyunseung leans closer to kiss him.
