It always came to be the dark haired, nerdy guys...

Pondering my - sometimes milder and sometimes alarming - obsessions for characters in various tv-shows throughout my life, there are some disturbing similarities.

At the very beginning - of course - there was Spock. My very first character obsession. Spock was - merely from the outward appearance - a dark haired, slender guy. Intelligent and brilliant way above the average human (he was half-Vulcan after all), he somtimes had troubles in socializing with friends and colleagues. He seemed obsessed with his work and could get completely absorbed by it and he would sacrifice himself for the greater good (the needs of the many...). Spock had a huge father-issue, which basically centered about his father Sarek not approving his choice of profession and which left Spock with the feeling (I know) that his father thought he was not good enough. Spock was nerdy before the invention of nerdness per se, and even back then, I loved this about him.

[Perhaps you can see, where I am going with this, but I will take a detour to my very next obsession that embarrassingly was a Soap-Opera character.]

But I have to say, that Falcon Crest was a really good soap after all and the character of my obsession was of course a dark haired, slender and devious guy with the name Richard Channing. Richard Channing was the smart and ambivalent bad guy, who machinated, manipulated and lied to get what he wanted (which was, of course, power, the Agretti-harvest and later on Maggie Gioberti). He did not have too many friends to socialize with, but crashed lots of Angela Channings parties. He usually got completely absorbed with his evil plans, but also sacrificed his life for the safety of his family (all right, he came back from the dead afterwards, but nevertheless). Richard Channing also had a father issue, which basically centered about his father abandoning and denying him from his birth on and lying about his real mother. Richard Channing was as nerdy as a 80s soap-character could be. He played with tin soldiers and exclusively drank milk. He was obsessed with and finally got "that one woman" he loved and I didn't like.

Somewhere in the 90s a spectacular show introduced a dark haired, slender and a bit dorky character. His name was Fox Mulder. He was intelligent, brilliant and a bit "of", did not socialize well with his FBI-colleagues, including at the beginning, Agent Scully, and seemed to be totally absorbed by his search for the truth. Mulder had a huge father issue which basically centered about his father not approving that Mulder worked on the X-Files. As I recall, Mulder did not like computers very much, but he had an affinity for pornography and - beside his work - basically no life. I loved the early Mulder, liked the tension between him and Scully but completely abandoned the show and the character after the 5th season and have - to the very day - not seen the final episode.

The next character obsession in line brought me further away, away to some insignificant space-station on the outer rim of the galaxy. On this space station a dark haired and slender doctor with the name Julian Bashir was on constant duty. Intelligent and brilliant way above the average human (he was genetically enhanced after all), he was ueber-eager with his work and somtimes early on had troubles in socializing with friends and colleagues. He was willing to sacrifice his life and Starfleet regulations for the greater good (but then, who on this station wasn't). Julian had a huge father issue, which basically centered around his father not approving that Julian chose to work on DS9 and getting him genetically manipulated as a child, because Julian wasn't learning fast enough. Julian Bashir had a nice English accent, enjoyed Darts and a good pint. He (kind of) was obsessed with and finally (sort of) got "that one woman" he loved and I didn't like.

My latest and still lasting character obsession seems to be very widespread in this wonderful LJ-World. It is of course the beloved Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. The dark haired and slender ex-Watcher. Wesley had early on troubles in socializing with friends and colleagues. Intelligent and brilliant, Wesley gets absorbed and ueber-eager with his work. He risks everything for the greater good. Wesley has a huge father issue, which basically centers around his father not approving Wesleys performance as a Watcher and his work with AI. Wesley has a nice English accent, enjoys Darts, a good pint and later on lots of Scotch. He is obsessed with and finally got "that one woman" he loves and I don't like.

Well, I rest my case for now.
