It’s amazing how taking away your blackberry can change a vacation into a holiday. Mr Blackskull and I are visiting his parents in a secluded area near Kamloops, BC. There is absolutely no cellular coverage here from my carrier. The first two days in BC I’ve been taking pictures on my phone and uploading them to facebook 30 seconds after taking them. My phone doesn’t work out here and I’m kind of glad.
The only other side-effect is that I don’t know what time it us. I’m still 3 hours ahead in my brain and I don’t wear a watch at the moment, so time feels like it’s moving deliciously slow as it’s always earlier than it feels.
Now, just because we’re in a remote area doesn’t mean there aren’t all the regular comforts here (minus not owning a stove in the conventional sense.) There is internet via a satellite receiver though I’ve resisted using it so far, a large flat-screened TV and a big, red comfy couch. Outside are two horses and their large paddocks, an adobe wood-burning oven and a large workshop that’s used by Mr Blackskull’s artist mother.
What is the hardest getting used to is the quiet. Last night it was silent. There is a slight drone from the highway, grunts and groans from the horses but other than that, there was nothing. That is a little scary for me. My experiences camping have never been to the centre of Algonquin Park and have always involved large groups of people. There are neighbours here but they are far and few between and there is a deafening silence out here.
The trade off for the silence was the spectacular view of the stars against the backdrop of the rolling hills. I’m use to seeing a slight dusting of astral bodies, not being able to view whole constellations and galaxies.
Today it’s raining so it’s been a very calm and down day. Mr Blackskull’s mother has been getting the oven’s fire going and is baking bread and dessert for tonight. The two horses have been wandering around mowing the lawn and occasionally part of the vegetable garden. We’ve been lounging either reading or listening to CBC Radio 1 or both. We fell asleep on the comfy couch so figured we should lie down and rest from all the excitement. This means laying on the bed reading, listening to AltNation on Sirius Radio methinks. There is cider in the fridge down here and a bottle of Malbec on the counter. This is heaven.
