On March 26, 1804, President Th. Jefferson attends a public party at the Senate and leads a diverse crowd in consuming an enormous loaf of bread dubbed the mammoth loaf.
Two years earlier, a group of Baptist women from Massachusetts had sent Jefferson a 1,200-pound hunk of cheese in gratitude for his support of religious tolerance. The cheese, they said, illustrated Jefferson’s claim that North America’s superior natural resources would one day enable the U.S. to outstrip all of Europe in agricultural production.
Jefferson’s Federalist opponents ridiculed the president’s scientific side projects as frivolous. In an attempt to embarrass the president, they dubbed the giant dairy product the mammoth cheese. To the Federalists’ surprise and disappointment, the general populace embraced the term with nationalistic zeal. Almost immediately, butcher shops and markets advertised mammoth-size products from sides of veal to pumpkins and loaves of bread.

1864
Gay James B. McPherson assumes command of the Union Army of the Tennessee after William T. Sherman is elevated to commander of the Division of the Mississippi, the overall leader in the West.
This force was not an independent command, as it was one of three armies under Sherman’s leadership during the Atlanta campaign of 1864. When the campaign reached Atlanta in July 1864 after three hard months of fighting, McPherson was charged with attacking Confederate forces on the northeast side of the city. At the Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 22, McPherson was directing operations when he and his staff emerged from a grove of trees directly in front of the Confederate line. They were ordered to surrender but McPherson turned his horse and attempted to escape. He was mortally wounded, becoming the highest-ranking Union general killed in the war.

Стр-во предусмотрено ГОЭЛРО, начато в 1932 г. Станцию, способную полностью обеспечить нужды города, начали строить вблизи порта. Проектировало Ленинградское отд. «Коммунэнергостроя» - головная в то время. Началась новая эра в развитии заполярной энергетики. Построена дорога Мурманск-Кола, начато стр-во Нижне-Туломской ГЭС. Через Колу от Мурманской ТЭЦ к месту стройки протягивают линию электропередачи и ж/д ветку, появляется посёлок энергетиков - Мурмаши.
В 1939 г. проложены первые километры тепловых сетей, и шесть самых больших зданий в городе стали отапливать централизованно. На время войны ТЭЦ остановлена.
