Accidental Lurcher

I've been really quiet lately because Still Not Enough Sleep, and now Brad is catching that too.

Chance ran into something Friday that dinged him up in a way that looked really superficial, and then after he ignored it all day other than some introductory licks, he enlarged it Saturday, and it's in a bad enough spot that it needed stitches (because ( Read more... )

along with a leash that will not hurt your hands when suddenly jerked

One of my dogs needs that. I'm very happy with a 3/4" wide leather lead, now that it's well broken in. On the few occasions that other people have had to walk him, I've always warned them to make sure to wrap the lead around their wrist at all times, because you just don't get enough warning to adjust your grip.

And one time he managed to knock me right to the ground, despite the fact that he was 30 lbs and I way quite a few times that. The secret was that he had walked almost all the way around me, so when he took off the leash caught the back of my knees, and I buckled right down. So definitely try to avoid that calamity. I was fortunate enough to be on grass when it happened, so only my pride was wounded.

Thanks to our former large enthusiastic critters, the first one of whom introduced himself to me with some well-meaning road rash before I figured out I really ought to let go, we were luckily already very sold on leather leads (this even *with* head collars; both of them could move me a few feet using only their noses if they took me by surprise, though without the road rash at least), and the one we have is pretty well broken in. We've lost a few to attrition -- at least dog at our daycare likes a nice salty broken in leather leash to eat. Still, it's really worth it; nylon web leashes HURT my hands. I don't mind the long line to be web because it's lighter and Chance hasn't been really pulling on that. (Because it's only coming out for the back yard right now, and that's not very exciting. He does like the extra range so he can sniff every inch of the perimeter and then stare out the gate hoping for a cat to test my resolve to not let him clear it ( ... )

Yeah, everything about the extendable leash is terrible. They're just miserable.

He's extremely strong. He's about 20" tall at the shoulders, but he can leap straight up and take a treat from my hand over 6' in the air. Obviously, there's a limit to the amount of pull he can generate, but he accelerates so fast, even on a 6

...even on a 6' lead, he hits the end of it at top speed. It's quite a yank.
