Last time I visited my doctor, I'd lost about 10 pounds, and this time I'd lost another 10 -- she was a little alarmed. I don't blame her as weight loss is a sign of hyperthyroid and could have meant my meds were adjusted wrong. But I was able to explain that my weight loss was intentional and I talked about my diet with her -- my iPod app came ( Read more... )

What is this "Fish Lady" that you speak of? It sounds wonderful.

It's not perfectly awesome but it's really not bad. It's a fish store in Soquel, a block or two from where the Cheese Connection used to be.

I think I'll be a regular for their ceviche, and I will definitely have to try the halibut cheeks even though they are quite spendy (I'll cook them like scallops), and mmmmm crab, and clams, and... hee. Also it looks easier to get raw prawns there than the hit-or-miss on prawns at my other stores.

I say "not perfectly awesome" mostly because I'm all wacko about sustainability and locally sourced stuff and it doesn't have everything labeled with how green it is and point of origin, which I prefer. OTOH I could just ASK and get a straight answer, no problemo. I also didn't do a stringent look but off the top of my head I didn't see any of the really bad offenders on the sustainability front, so I suspect they score pretty well. They do seem to feature local fish pretty well, assuming all of the fish that I know can be caught locally was, which it probably was.

I think where they really shine is in the area that I'd use less: prepared foods. I expect their gumbo to be seriously good, and I bet it will be a very popular lunch place when they start serving lunch formally. They have packaged creole sauce, too, that apparently makes a killer base for fish stew. (I should check to see if that's roux-thickened sometime!) I also like that they're a full-featured meat store: you can get all sorts of meat, not just fish.
