I got my blood test done today, for my next thyroid checkup. I also hunted down a pharmacy -- in Walnut Creek, alas, but at least in California -- where I can get natural dessicated thyroid. There is a crazy shortage of it that may well have been orchestrated by the manufacturor of Armour thyroid -- who are at least now the subject of at least one class-action suit and an FDA investigation. But small comfort when you can't get the stuff by hook or by crook. One of the nice thing about this pharmacy is that as it is a compounding pharmacy, there are NO fillers and I can get exactly the dose I need. No more cutting pills! No more taking medicine with corn starch in it every day!
After that we went to the Westside Farmers Market -- once again the private parking lot that had been donating parking was closed, so I am going to be surprised if that's not a trend. Sadly this makes it cost more spoons than the Cabrillo Market because dealing with 20 cars all trying to parallel park or leave at once on the same few blocks is entirely too much complexity for my poor brain. I feel wiggy even as a passenger, though it's at least manageable that way. I did notice that they'd put in a big bicycle parking area for
pyrzqxgl at least! I'll probably go there with Brad so he can handle the driving, and if I'm driving myself go to the Cabrillo market from now on.
I want to try to make soup and a real veggie side this week, not just salads, so I stocked up on a variety of root veggies and on kabocha squash. I'm thinking of leek and kabocha soup and roasted root veggies, to go with sauerkraut, onions, and chicken sausage. Hopefully I will still have energy tomorrow to achieve this. The midweek plan is probably dal after all that meat.
Got home, lay about for a while recovering, then went out to enact plan housewares. I've been wanting to get us enough washcloths that we can use washcloths for most jobs paper towels get used for. This means we have to have enough lying around that it's natural to just grab and use. So I needed those, and also I cannot FIND our spare duvet cover, and we lost one of the lids for one of our pieces of glasslock, etc. Also we could use more of the smaller glasslock tubs. So I stocked up on those sorts of things and they lay around some more to recover.
Astonishingly, after that I was actually able to get up and do some cooking. I topped all the root veggies (beets, rutabagas, radishes) and saved out the good leaves, then roasted some sunchokes (with rosemary and garlic) and cauliflower (with turmeric, cumin, and garlic) that was languishing in the crisper. I also blanched some brussels sprouts but didn't get past that step (tomorrow!) I baked some kale chips while I had the oven hot, too. I cooked some bamboo rice because I felt like having it with the stew for dinner. I also bruised some of the kaffir lime leaves and mixed them with yogurt, as an experiment. I also put up some beet kvass, using fresh sauerkraut juice as a lactic acid starter rather than whey. We'll see if that works.
Freezer action:
Lots of lemon juice from the big batch my mom squeezed. (The lemon zest was already frozen, but I hadn't had time to clear space in the freezer to deal with the juice yet.)
Kaffir lime leaves.
Four servings of the lamb & bean stew.
Some small servings of rice, since it's handy for adding to things.
I've cleared several fruits and veggies out of the freezer this week, as well. Still a lot to go, but the freezer is beginning to look vaguely sane even though I moved the ice cream chiller bowl in and am still adding things as I go.
