Giving My Birthday to Fight Lymphoma

Aug 27, 2013 22:30

As another birthday approaches (what, again?), I've been asked by some about what gifts might be appropriate to such an occasion. This turned out to be a tough question for me; I've been very fortunate, and honestly don't want for very much. So I decided to give my birthday to others.

So next month I am riding with "Team Shaken, not Stirred" to help support the Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF), a nationwide, non-profit organization dedicated to funding research and providing support and education for those whose lives have been touched by Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Lymphoma is the most common blood cancer in the United States today and the third most common form of childhood cancer. There are 500,000 people living with lymphoma today, with 79,000 new cases and 20,000 deaths every year. I've been lucky in that lymphoma has not come calling upon my family. But in undertaking this ride I've discovered that it has touched friends, sometimes tragically. If I can do even a little bit to keep that from happening to someone else, I'm in. I'm already getting close to the ride minimum of $1,000. I'd like to get well beyond that if we can.

So if you were considering giving me a birthday present (or even if you weren't ;-) ), I'd be honored if you donated to the LRF ride instead. The link to my fundraising web page is here. As with all of my past charitable rides, I am putting my money where my bicycle is - so I will be matching the largest single donation. But any donation helps and is greatly appreciated. We, together, can make a difference. Thanks to all for support, moral and monetary!
