I LOVED "Sin City", "300" and "The Spirit". In the end, however, movies like "Sin City", "300" and "The Spirit" wouldn't be held in such high regard, if not for the strength of their respective stylized visuals. The stories in all were solid, but often times felt like static moments in life, stretched to fill 120 minutes of space. Creative and sweeping visuals often filled the inbetween moments of story. Maybe, with the visual comic book medium as source material, these films are just built to do so. I don't know. All I know is that as a comic book enthusiast, I have to rate all of these films high on the giddy scale.
"The Spirit" takes old-school film noir detective stories (complete with appropriate dialogue and pacing) and packages it in Frank Miller's unique vision. Amazing. Considered by some as corny at some points, I like to think that it has something to do with the viewers' lack of familiarity with the genre. I liked it. Visually stunning, with a simple story that drives with purpose. Twists and turns are there, but don't steer the viewer off course.
Good stuff.
