How many times had he done it?

Neku stared at the mural and its riot of colors. Sometimes it was more like music. It left him feeling like he was going insane, and it made him want to avoid talking to those who gathered around him.

There was no war in their world. There was no death or sorrow. What was death? He could barely remember it, and when he tried to mention the word, it was as though the word itself had been stolen from his lips. Neku knew what it was to die. But the concept itself was lost from this world.

It struck him deeply, as he stared up at the Udagawa mural and the visage of a reaper and a cat pointing down at him as though to admonish him or to serve as a morbid reminder. So many pieces were missing, and no matter how long he stared at the colors, he couldn't put them back together. Neku felt like his friends were tugging at him, trying to get him to go to school, trying to get him to go home. He shrugged them off, sure that he felt a strange ache in his chest.

It felt like something was moving around, jabbing him in the hole that had opened up there. Like a world consuming black hole, some awful emptiness had opened in his heart, and it was starting to consume him. Staring at CAT's work, he could swear that he felt someone's hands running through his hair. He reached out and brushed his fingertips across the brightly colored designs that rang out inside of his skull like the tones of well tuned bells and yet... He couldn't place where it was coming from. It was maddening.

"It's not ready yet. I need more time."

Neku turned on his heel, eyes wide and expecting to see... something. Anything. He froze. There was nothing. But it sounded close. There was another voice.

"You're cuttin' it close, boss. I'm doin' everything I can but--"
"You've done quite enough."

The other voice didn't respond.
