I wanted to post about my progression with Maat's Cap every now and then, but I've been far too lazy. So where am I now? All my jobs are 66 (and yes, I astral burned DRK and SMN a year ago and chigoe burned part of PLD and BST, so what).
At the moment, I'm frustrated with BST. Immensely. Everyone tells me it's one of the easiest ones and all the entries on wiki are written for 66 BST and insist they didn't have to rely on meds/2hour/reward...but I am 0/3 now, and it has been by far my most difficult fight (and I was purposely trying to leave the "easy" ones for last). In fact, the only other one that took me more than one attempt was RDM, and I got him to 24% the first time before sleep resisted and he Asuran'd me. If I had healed myself just one more time after Convert (was concerned about MP), I may have won. The second round, I resisted my first three sleeps and was ready to just use a Warp Scroll out of there to save myself the humiliation (I even told Kongming "Resisted three sleeps in a row" and he assumed I died). But I won. Easily.
BEASTMASTER? WELL FUCK. And I rarely cuss, so you know I mean it.
First try:
I read 2hour was unnecessary. And for whatever reason, I tend to conserve my 2hour if possible in these fights (so that I can do another or something, even though that reasoning is stupid since I have medicated status from Icarus Wing). I also didn't bring any pet food or use potions. Kongming was so sure I'd win, that he made a Nyzul shout even though the plan was if I died, he'd come raise me. I thought it'd be a breeze.
I went in, called Lifedrinker Lars. I slept myself to 100% TP, then sicced Lars on Maat. I then Rampaged Maat's fly, then switched to Maat, popped wing, Rampaged Maat. I then used Snarl and continued to melee Maat. He summoned another fly, so I switched to the fly. But Maat used Familiar and his fly ANNIHILATED me.
Second try:
I decided I might as well use 2hour, because in the last fight I doubt I would've won if I'd kept the fly on my pet. Lars was already near death and Maat was no where near. Kongming also suggested I use CC since its defense is high, and to leave the pet on him while I focus on Maat.
So I summoned CC, used Familiar, slept to 100% TP, sicced CC on Maat, Rampaged Maat, popped wing, Rampaged Maat again, then I TP'd. Except that during the whole fight CC did not hit Maat a single time, and I did not fare much better (I got 24% TP before my pet and I died). I'm not sure how far Maat got, but it wasn't close.
Third try:
This went much better, but my pet still dies too fast, even with Familiar (which makes no sense since others claim they didn't need at 66). I decided to combine both of the aforementioned strategies and only Rampage Maat's pet when he uses Familiar. Except it wasn't even necessary by chance (since sometimes pet randomly hits Maat's pet instead of Maat).
I used Lifedrinker Lars again, then Familiar'd. Slept to 100% TP, sicced Lars on Maat, Rampaged Maat, then TP'd. When he used Familiar on his rabbit, I switched target and popped my wing--but Lars killed the rabbit in just a few seconds. So I switched back to Maat. I saved my TP as Lars was about to die and Snarl wouldn't be up in time for the next pet if I used it after Rampage now. So I waited until Lars died, then called another one. But Maat called a tiger before I could do anything, so when I used Snarl the tiger was stuck on me. The tiger was hitting me pretty hard, so I rampaged it and killed it instantly. Even then, Lars was going down fast and Maat not quite as fast. So I figured it wouldn't hurt to melee Maat and help my pet, since Maat was already down to 30-35%. Except that after a single hit for 29 damage, Maat turned to me and killed me in one WS.
Fourth try in 30 minutes when 2hour is back up. I guess I'll try the third strategy, but with reward this time.
