NH Marine Patrol Trainee testing this morning…
There were a lot of people there. So the officers decided to split everyone into two groups, one group would take the written test and the other would take the physical agility test; I was in the group for the physical agility test.
First task was to bench 96% of my bodyweight, I was a little worried about this because I never really have done any weightlifting and I had to do one repetition of 177 pounds. We each had up to two warm-up repetitions, but as soon as we would have the target weight on the bar you have to bench it. I had no idea what to start with and I wanted at least one practice, so I just said the first number that came to mind, 130. It really wasn’t that bad, so I just thought to heck with it and had them put on my target weight. I start doing it and on the way back to the up position I started to slide on the bench, so I stopped to adjust (meanwhile I’m still holding the weight) and one of the officers spotting me just said, “Explode!” so I just finished my rep.
Next were sit-ups, I had to do 37 within a minute. No problem.
After that it was pushups, I had to do 27 no time limit. No problem, but when I reached my target the guy just staring at me, and it kind of confused me so I stayed in the up position and said, “Umm, am I done?” He said that I met the standard and off I went.
Final part of the physical agility test would be running 1.5 miles, my time limit was 13:06. The Police Standards Training Facility has an indoor track, it’s very nice. But it is the second floor and it had dry hot air. 1.5 miles on this track is 17 and 1/3 laps. I started off pretty good, I was with the first 4, and we lapped a few people. But, about halfway through, I got a Charlie-horse in my left calf; so now I don’t only have cottonmouth because of the dry-hot air, I also have a Charlie-horse, while running, for a job I really want/need. I guess I’m either determined, crazy, or both. I kept going. My number was 233 (pinned on the front of our shirts, we also had to yell it out to the examiners every lap) and after reaching my second to last lap one of the examiners yelled out, “C’mon 233! Show us what you got!” I think to myself fine, it’s the last lap and I don’t have any other physical tests. So I all out sprint, kind of hurt with the Charlie-horse, but whatever. I passed a good amount of people and one of them said, “What the f***!” I did meet the requirement but thanks to the Charlie-horse I only got 12:12 for time.
Passed the written, and it wasn’t easy.
Formal interview this Thursday. Yeah that’s right I did all this just for an interview.
Okay I’m tired, and my calf hurts a little bit. Off to bed.
