Thanks for the signal-boost! We'll see if there are any nibbles...I'm pretty new to this. I just finally managed to collect some thoughts, and thought I might share them, if there was any interest.
I've thought that about the colors before, but it didn't crystallize until last night. I agree - warmth and character are everything, if you're looking for a place to relax and let it all hang out. Modern is clean and striking, but it can be cold, too, and encourages reservation.
The bee as a motif is something I want to poke at, a little bit. I'm wary of attempting fic for this canon, but then I was thinking I also want to try writing about platonic relationships and making them every bit as important and deep as romantic ones?
The bee has so many layers, doesn't it? And the fact that it's canon only makes it better.
There's a need for more *truly* platonic romances, I think. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that's part of why the SH stories have had such longevity in the first place. They fill that need for examples of deep friendship - platonic romance - where non-platonic romance can be full of the stumbling blocks of expectation, I think that platonic romances might have fewer of these, therefore the bonds can perhaps be even stronger and deeper, in a way? It's definitely worth exploring.
And that idea is so cute, I could squeal. You know I'm not a cute kinda person per se, but there's something about this show and all its jagged edges that it creates a kind of... safe space? Like it's okay to have fluff in there because the show will deal with all the human failings and such?
I kinda squealed, it's true, which is why I had to post it. And it's not a 'baby-fic' idea either, really, so maybe that makes it better somehow? The thought is that the 'audience' for it ought to be 10-year-olds as well, to keep it a bit more 'honest', and less precious?
I agree about the 'safe space' - the show creates such an atmosphere of it. Sherlock especially is so jagged and raw, but the space he and Joan create together is exactly that - a safe place to BE a bit jagged and raw, not a place to have those edges filed off or forced into line - that's the world, and it hurts.
