Why Joan loves Sherlock/why Sherlock is so very alone:
He's eccentric, no question - maddening, infuriating, it's true. He is probably no good with relationships because he is usually not able to do the things that the other person would *expect*, either out of constitutional inability, or out of sheer perversity. But with Joan - it's not the things that she might expect....it's the things he does that are *unexpected* that make her love him. He has quite a lot to give, and he *does* give it, just in unexpected ways, obliquely. And the thought that someone like Irene/Moriarty would *take* that beautiful, unique spirit, and attempt to crush it? Just because she can, as a game, or a challenge, or because he got in the way? That's heartbreaking.
Joan knows how (or is finding a way) to accept Sherlock's 'gifts' and 'giftedness', without putting qualifiers on them, or burdening him with expectations related to them that he is incapable of meeting. She does have expectations for him, but not usually in relation to her - her expectations for him are for *him*, to help him, protect him, make him better, keep him healthy and safe. To help him be a better him *for him*, not for her.
Heh. I think I must love all iterations of Sherlock Holmes, because Sherlock is an introvert. I can relate.
