open your minds and your wallets

I know that only a handful of people read this, but I wanted to share this with everyone. If you haven't already, please please please give money to help the victims of Katrina. There are a million places to go and donate, so I'll just post the biggest one here: www.redcross.org
As I sit here in the comfort of my home, typing away, I realize how fortunate I am to have all that I have. The ongoing disaster of Katrina really puts life into perspective.
Having said that, I think it's absolutely appalling the way the government has handled the whole situation in New Orleans. It's so nice to know our fearless leader Georgie-boy could stay on vacation while Katrina waged a natural war on the Gulf Coast. Maybe if it was the Persian Gulf he would have reacted more quickly.
Anyways, in case you haven't already heard, Kanye West bravely spoke out against Georgie-boy during the NBC hurricane fund-raising concert show this weekend. Sadly, we was censored for the West Coast feed, but here's a link to the full clip:

Scroll down the screen to get to the Windows Media Player file. For those of you who can't view the clip, here's a transcript of what happened (taken from another blog site):

Actor Mike Meyers reads off prompter … switches to rapper Kanye West:

“I hate the way they portray us in the media.

“If you see a black family it says they are looting if you see a white family it says they are looking for food.

“And you know that it’s been 5 days because most of the people are black and even for me to complain … I would be a hypocrite because I would turn away from the TV because it’s too hard to watch. I’ve even been shopping before giving a donation and so right now I’m calling my business manager what is the biggest amount I can give.

“And just to imagine if I was down there, those are my people down there. So anybody out there who wants to help with the set up, the way that America is set up to help … The poor, the black people, the less well off as slow as possible. I mean, Red Cross is doing everything they can.

“We already realize alot of the people that could help are at war now fighting another way and they’ve given them permission to go down and shoot us.”

(Mike Meyers tries to get back on prompter, reads from script and then camera cuts back to Kanye. He pauses:

Kanye West: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

Then camera abruptly switches to another actor, Chris Tucker who dutifully reads off prompter …

He may not have spoken it as eloquently as he would have liked, but Kanye was clearly speaking from the heart, and more importantly, he said what a lot of people have been thinking for a long time, but haven't had the platform to say it on, especially when you think of how conservative most major news outlets are. I remember how sick I felt the day after the election last November, and is saddens me to see how Georgie-boy has yet to prove me wrong. Maybe now people will see just how corrupt and self-serving the conservative agenda has become, and in the next election we will see a genuine paradigm shift. It just came at a terrible cost.
Enough of me on my soapbox--I'll leave you with this:
