I believe wholeheartedly in Sod's Law. After recent statements I've made to people I should've actually been able to predict what happened on Thursday night.
1: Whilst counting my winnings from a random horse bet I put on me and Mac discussed how I seemed to have turned into a money magnet of late. Whatever I did I somehow profited from. I stated, foolishly and jokingly, that, "Something will probably happen soon to make me skint again."
2: Discussing my step-father's driving as he drove bumper to bumper at about 95mph all down the motorway. Quote: "If he stops for any reason now you'll go right up his arse."
3: Me mocking my mother for having so many prangs in her car. Again, I stupidly said, "I've never hit anything when driving."
Can you guess what happened?
Me, my mother and my two grandparents decided to go and watch my neice in a swimming gala up in Redruth. I was asked to drive by my mother because she gets very nervous driving anywhere other than Penzance. As we cruised up the A30, just before the second Camborne turn off, we came across traffic cones in the road which turned the dual carraige into a single lane. What I remember is this: not much. I complained to my grandfather about people sqeezing past and overtaking explaining my theory of how traffic jams occur. We carried on for a bit in silence and the next minute we'd stopped and the bonnet was buckled into the windscreen.
The noise my grandmother made got me moving again after I sat there stunned. I span in my seat to tend to my grandparents and then check my mother out. For some odd reason I then got out of the car and legged it to the other cars that had been hit. I sorted them out as best I could and then a policewoman came over who saw the crash to help me out. She was actually cleaning up a similar crash that happened there about an hour before.
She thinks that the car I hit had already hit the car in front of him and because I saw no brakelights I had little time to stop before hitting both of them.
After various breathalysings (passed of course) and statements I got in the ambulance with my mother and followed my grandparents ambulance to Truro.
Thankfully everybody is OK. We've all got cracked ribs and bruises. My grandmother was admitted to hospital to be watched over and she'll hopefully be out tomorrow.
Everybody in my car said there was nothing I could do. The policewoman hinted as much although I was warned that I was clearly doing something wrong because you must always have enough space between you and the car in front. I can't help but feel massive shame and guilt. Having to phone relatives and explain how I hospitalised a good percentage of my immediate family. Their first question is always, "Who was driving?"
Insurance all OK and sorted although it doesn't cover my mother's car which I was due to buy in a week. So I'll have to sort her out. I'm just waiting for the police to decide if they will prosecute me and the driver in front.
Don't mess with Sod's Law!
