Rapture!

Heh, last night I watched an episode of Ellen (which is actually a surprisingly good show) that seemed tailor-made for me. First of all, it featured the character of Audrey (Clea Lewis), who is the main reason I started paying attention to the show while the wife watched it (for the more obvious GLBT reasons). She's supposed to be annoying in a humorous way, but I just see her as quirky, and I've always had a thing for weirdness. Think Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) in Friends (when the writers weren't trying to make her a dumb blonde) or Audrey Hepburn's Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

I think it all started with this friend of mine in high school in upstate New York, Jen. I had the feeling it might have become more than a friendship if we hadn't moved to California when we did, but who knows? That's a long story for another time (no, Erika is nothing like this, and when I dated women like this it was disastrous).

Anyway, while I find Audrey endearingly captivating, everybody else on the show sees her as annoyingly perky. She always wears pink and speaks in a high, squeaky voice. When her car broke down, she begins carpooling with Ellen, who is quickly driven mad and decides to help Audrey buy a new car. And the car she gets is a total spoof of Saturn (called "Rapture" in the show).

Yes, I drive a Saturn. A 1993 SL2 with a blue exterior and interior. And yes, we are a little creepy.

No, I never went to any of those gatherings of Saturn owners or went back to tour the factory. But I do love my car. I named her Sadie (it seemed like the only name that would fit a Saturn), and when driving or riding around with my friends, I would endlessly irritate them by excitedly pointing out every single other Saturn on the road (this would be especially annoying if we passed a Saturn dealership). I guess I'm probably as annoying as Audrey in that respect. And the show mocked the Saturn mystique relentlessly, depicting it as a cult. I thought it was hilarious.

Anyway, it probably sounds like I was warming up for a long interesting story, but no, that's it. Just watched a show with a character I absolutely adore buying a car that I am a little bit too fond of, and I just thought it was totally cool.

My next car probably won't be a Saturn, believe it or not. I've been thinking about getting one of those hybrids, as I'm always going on about how we oughtta be getting the country less dependent upon foreign oil with a gas tax or oil import fee. But I'm in no rush. I still get 30 MPG from ol' Sadie.
