Game 7

Spoilers below.

Gah, my Mets lost. At least, unlike in 2000, it wasn't against the Yankees, or any other team that I dislike. And it wasn't in the World Series. Yeah, the Buffalo Bills teach us that it's far better to lose in the semifinals than the finals because less people are watching. Silly, but true. Nor were they likely to even be competitive in the World Series anyway. After losing Pedro and El Duque, they were lucky to even get to the NLCS, let alone a 7th game. I don't really have time to be watching this much baseball anyway, when I've got enough going on as it is.

I suppose that's a pretty fucked up attitude to have, but sports really don't matter that much in the grand scheme of things. Bragging rights if they win, but that's all. If they lose. Eh. Nobody really cares. Best sporting event I ever saw (on television) remains Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Rangers and the Devils in 1994 that went to double sudden-death overtime. By far. Nothing else is even close. Does anybody here even know what the heck I am talking about, let alone care? I didn't think so.

Ah well. Why did I watch the NLCS (well, starting at the end of game 4)? Partially because I'd lose fan cred if I didn't, so I felt obligated (I can get away with not watching or listening to a single regular season game at all the entire year, but a guy is expected to remember important playoff moments). But also because it's fun. Exciting game. Exciting series. And both Bay Area teams were already gone, so rubbing that in is always extra fun (I liked the Giants, but without ex-Mets Kent or Alfonzo, haven't really cared anymore -- I can't stand Bonds, and long thought Alou was not a good manager and that Sabean was given far too much credit for merely improving the present by sacrificing the future).

Anyway, the Mets have a great young core in Reyes, Wright, and Beltran. And they finally have a good coach in Randolph and a great GM in Minaya. Plus a big budget because baseball is, idiotically, a cartel and thus will not allow market forces to add a third team in New York to level demand. So the Mets'll be back for the new several years. And even though they haven't won a World Series in a while, they didn't choke a 3-0 game lead like the Yankees. And in a year when they don't lose two of their best starting pitchers right before the playoffs, I'll probably care a little more. I mean, I obviously cared enough to write this post, so it's not like I don't care. But I'm also a bit relieved I won't have to spend time watching a World Series they were likely to lose. I kinda got bigger fish to fry right now.

Anyway, I've gotta love TiVo. Not only can I get through a game in half the time, but there's nothing like fast-forwarding through the opposing team's at-bats after they take the lead to get the game over with and lessen the sting of a loss. These things are more painful when they're drawn out. Like a lot of things, really.
