On a World AIDS Day-related note, we had our first 'tutorial' on Friday and it was about HIV. Apparently the Kenyan government has made anti-retrovirals available free to all who need them. And 6.1% of the population is infected.
BUT the actual HIV test, and subsequent blood tests you need to have to guage whether or not retrovirals would do you any good, and whether they were doing you harm, all the peripheries - all of that still costs people. 200 shillings per test when you aren't earning much more than that in half a month is a lot.
So something I never realised when campaigning with Stop AIDS in the UK: free retrovirals are not the be-all and end-all.
