you pass up an opportunity to bowl with the city folk so that you can sit outside on the back porch in the middle of the night, smoke, and jam to the theme of deliverance with your siblings (alex on the guitar, annalee with the violin). one of the coolest things ever to happen to my banjo.

and then annalee played so and so's Cannon and alex accompanied (much to my dismay, i played some other song) and when they were through, i remarked that the song always gives me an incredibly vivid image of a green hillside that i am sure must be in alaska. he said, "i know," and basically explained that i was the victim of national public television brainwashing. well, he didn't say that i was brainwashed--i did--but it's a beautiful place. hmm yes, and a beautiful song. although it looks like the brainwashing tutorial jess and karlye and i were talking about setting up may have to be held off for a year,if anyone knows of any good books on the topic, i'd really like to start learning about it.
that song is also very closely tied in with my younger childhood, naptimes in kindergarten, npr during the drive to school or church. it means something that tonight i finally thought to learn to play it, that a song that makes a person nostalgic for beautiful places or people or for his or her past can be taught, can be learned.
