Let's be totally honest about what could happen. Your Cantoring income comes to one tenth of your annual income, which is primarily earned from September through May. From May to September, the services are divided up by the choir director, and your income is determined by her good graces. if you blow off Conformation for something as "trivial" as a family celebration, if it does not feature you as the Corpse, will royally PISS madame Director off, and you could be banished to a summer with poerhaps one singing gig, instead of 4-5 per month. While in theory the Cantoring money is surplus , who ever finds themselves in a position of extra money cluttering up their home and wallet ? Like all other mortal humans, you begin to live in accordance with your income, and a reduced level causes hardships. Like not being able to afford gas for anything beyond travel back and forth to work, no funds for necessary clothing purchases, and God Forbid if someone breaks a pair of glasses, needs a filling or blows a tire. Like it or not, you have to do what you must to suck up and kiss the Ass of the powers that be. To do otherwise would be rather immature , flighty and stupid. Something so many family members have accused us of numerous times. I don't know about you, but I enjoy proving them wrong and making them cry in the process.
