Back to homeschool today after a 3 week break. For the first time ever, I found myself asking myself if I could be excused. While we did not do any big thing while on vacation, ,it was off from the routine and I really needed the mental break. We begin using 3 different textbooks today and combining two different methods, and it just felt potentially like too much work. I would rather face my morning with this face
instead of what I feared would be my reality- me looking something like this when I heard the protests about doing math and grammar
Happily, the morning has turned to be a balance between the two. Breaks really help my son to regroup and when we get back to the grind he shows some real progress from doing nothing. One thing I am trying this session is creating a lapbook based around a chapter book. It's kind of an artistic, fun way to test reading comprehension. Nick has a very high reading level, but has much word freak out. In other words he reads at a 12th grade word level , but if it is more than a paragraph he freaks out about the volume of reading. I have been working with him this year to get past this , and he has started to really enjoy some novels. Odd thing is he dislikes fantasy sorts of stories- even Charlottes Web is too fantasy for his interests, so I have been focusing on books about very real life matters. I am having him read Farmer Boy by Laura Ingals Wilder at the moment and creating a lap book about it. At first he looked at it and kind of groaned because of the size of the book, but once he sat down to read it, he really enjoyed it. I am setting a very easy goal for him of a chapter a day, and if he desires more than this each day we will go for it.
To motivate myself to get going I did a workout with Wii fit and my stability ball while son grazed through breakfast. Exercise helps to get your mind sharpened and can help you to face what you don't want to face with a little more ease and grace. However , hearing that you are older and a little heavier from yesterday can be counter productive. Mister Wii Fit, show som pitty, will you ? ( Note- it is normal for the human body to fluctuate anywhere from 2-5 pounds in a day , and for this reason weighing oneself is not recommended by fitness experts.)
