Tomatoes & Soup & What This Means About Our Relationship.
The sky was perpetually raining.
SASUKE: No one said you had to stay.
JAEJOONG: I know. But I wanted to.
SASUKE: But it wasn't for me.
JAEJOONG: Then who was it for?
By the time Sasuke left the door, Jaejoong already knew the answer. He sat on the stool, letting the hollow bell ring into the hollow apartment. He carefully picked up the bag of tomatoes left on the counter and put it down again. Left it by the door.
He stopped by Changmin's later that night.
JAEJOONG: Changmin, ah.
SPEAKER: Hyung?
JAEJOONG: It's me. Let me in.
SPEAKER: It's two in the morning, what are you doing here?
JAEJOONG: Making you soup.
SPEAKER: [silence] What kind?
JAEJOONG: Does it matter, you'll eat anything. But if you really want to know, it's tomato.
SPEAKER: Okay, okay, I'm coming.
JAEJOONG: I'll add chicken in it, just for you.
They huddled around the little table, each armed with a plastic spoon and a bottle of soju. Changmin never did ask Jaejoong why he showed up in the middle of the night, why, after all this time, he came to see him at all. Jaejoong just watched him eat. Changmin had said that the soup was good and that it also tasted like him. He was like a nostalgic flavor, something you only missed when it was all gone.
CHANGMIN: Are you going back to the grocery store?
JAEJOONG: Yeah, did you want me to pick up something?
CHANGMIN: No. Just wanted to know where I could find you.
JAEJOONG: But you already know where I am.
CHANGMIN: Not really. Just physically.
JAEJOONG: I have to go. It's raining.
CHANGMIN: Bye. You're always gone.
JAEJOONG: Do you have an umbrella?
CHANGMIN: Yeah. Here. Bye.
JAEJOONG: Thanks.
CHANGMIN: No problem. Bye.
JAEJOONG: How many times do you have to say bye to me?
CHANGMIN: Well I never got to say it last time, did I?
Jaejoong came home to Sasuke peeling apples on a dusted counter. The floor was clean. They stared at each other for a bit, until Sasuke broke the silence and mumbled something about ordering more boxes of condoms. They were out again.
