Just prior to the last entry, I had started the second season of Once Upon a Time. On Sunday, I finished it. You know I like a show if I can't watch just one episode at a time. It's particularly telling if it's a one-hour show and I finish it in a week. (Usually, no matter how much I like a show, I get bored if I try to marathon it. This is not true of most sit-coms, of course.)
I know that some people thought season two paled when compared to season one. I am not one of those. Yes, season one had the new and shiny and "What will they introduce next?" elements to it. In season two, it's no longer new. The danger with a show like Once Upon a Time is that once the central problem has been resolved, where do you go next? Well, season two. The things that happened, the character struggles, just flowed so well from where season one left off.
I won't try to say it was perfect. There were plot elements that did not make sense to me (Dr. Whale -- but as I said before, it could also lead to some new and interesting developments down the line). There are questions still left unanswered (regarding Tamara and Greg especially). Even so, the good far outweighed the bad for me, and because of the cliffhanger, there's a good jumping-off point for season three.
And now there is a spin-off: Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. Oddly, I had expected the plot to split the characters off, and that would be how the spin-off would be justified... but no. Its just gonna happen. I won't say I'm disinterested, since I enjoy the Alice in Wonderland mythos -- and with this being Once Upon a Time, you know they're going to spin it on its ears, no pun intended. And we've already met a few characters from Wonderland -- so maybe this is kind of a prequel spin-off that might show the Queen of Hearts's rise to power? Maybe it will include the details that led to the Mad Hatter being sucked into the curse when Wonderland wasn't technically part of that world?
Personally, I'm waiting for Oz to show up somewhere in the show. They've made veiled, jokey references to it -- I especially liked Regina's line about turning green, though I forget the context. At some point, Henry needs to stumble across a yellow brick road. That's all I'm saying. Well, once the cliffhanger events get resolved.
My intent is to try to watch both Once Upon a Time shows live when they begin (resume), if they're not on too late. (Seriously. 5:00 comes VERY early.) Rumor has it that ABC has made some kind of internet deal with a cable company and plans to curtail their free streaming offerings. This will make a net-watching flickguy very sad indeed, if it is true. There is no way I can stay up to watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Says the guy who never gets to bed when he's supposed to.
In non-television news, there is really no news. The weekend was filled with the above, and a bit of EverQuest II thrown in for the killing factor. Things at work have been stressful; I'm having a very hard time keeping up with the workload, and I've started making the kinds of mistakes that have me concerned for future employment. There was a silver lining yesterday in an exchange with the supervisor person, but on the heels of that came another error that wasn't entirely my fault.
Today will be a good day. I have deemed it thus, and so it must come to pass.
Catch you soon, Dear Journal.
