[Just outside the barracks, still well within the protection of the people who have been keeping the barracks safe for the triage and near enough to a door if a big monster arrives, Fenimore's already having enough trouble with one food thief. With Walter's help to ward off monsters, she'd managed to catch some fish to supplement the food reserves of the triage.

Her share, though, is already in danger of being stolen by a large furfur that has been following her around. She's holding the plate with the cooked piece of fish above her head as she tries to ward off the furfur with her foot.]

Find your own food! Do you even eat fish?

[...fish? You have fish. That actually gets her attention a little more than the furfur to begin with. For a second, she thinks Fenimore is addressing her with that remark-- and then she takes in the large ...oh wow. Small child is stopping in the road and gaping.]

[It takes Fenimore a few moments to notice her, but after hopping back on one foot, waving the other foot in warning at the fufur, she catches sight of the girl out of the corner of her eye.]

Oh, hey Shirley. [She sounds quite a bit calmer when addressing Katie than when she was addressing the furfur, which seems to be considering moving closer to Fenimore again despite Fenimore's warnings.]

[Passing the gaping stage and heading straight into delight now. That thing is cute. And overly large.]

Hello. What is that?

[...and can she steal your fish? >.>]

[Only if she's sneaky enough about it.] It's a--no, get your own! [The latter is directed at the furfur, which had been much less sneaky than necessary. It backs off.] I was told it's called a furfur. And, I know, it's a silly name for any kind of monster, even a wimp like that one.

[She's not quite selfish enough to yoink that fish off the plate. Though she may give it a hungry look.] I think it's cute.

[Puppy eyes are probably the most effective strategy, though Fenimore hasn't noticed the hungry look yet, glancing down at the furfur. ...Okay, she could admit as much to a child.] ...Maybe it's a little cute. But it's still almost more trouble than it's worth--careful! [The last is, again, directed at the furfur, as it (he?) starts shuffling towards Katie, curious. Fenimore's still not sure if it's really safe, after it had attacked her the first day, but she figures that she'd be able to beat it off before it could do any damage to Katie.]

[Katie tilts her head and watches it approach, stretching out both hands to pet it. She figures she can probably send it across the map if it does try biting her, but she suspects it won't.] You could hide in its fur if it was winter.

[This one seems to have calmed down a lot by this point, so it stops just inside Katie's arms' reach and seems to be looking her over, making a noise of curiosity. When Fenimore feels more confident that it won't attack her, she sighs.]

Maybe. I would want to wash it before I tried that, though. Who knows where it's been?

[Running hands over fur is go. Does it like getting scritched?] You could take it to the lake. [...] When the world's not trying to end.

[Those certainly sound like pleased noises and it is closing its eyes, so the answer appears to be yes.]

The world's not ending. [Though she glances up at the sky, suppressing the urge to say "I think."] I certainly didn't miss having monsters around, but maybe they'll leave for the forest once things settle down a little.

Some of them might have difficulty fitting in. Have you seen the dragons? They'll have to fight for space with the giant wolf god.

The monsters back home seemed to be healthy enough, whether they fought for space or not. [She shakes her head.] Then again, there wasn't anything as big as some of the dragons here. I didn't even know dragons grew that big.

Oh, dragons can be very big. We have ones as big as skyscrapers back home. They have to watch where they put their feet.

[At the word "skyscrapers", given the topic of conversation, Fenimore imagines something with large wings and claws.] I don't think that there are any skyscrapers where I come from. At least, I've never heard of one.

[Katie would much prefer that version of skyscraper. It sounds cool.]

It's a kind of cleaner. They have to go up in the sky and scrape it clean when there's too much pollution.
