It turns out that my method of walking in order to avoid slipping in mud is not the same as my method of walking to avoid slipping on ice. Which is annoying when the surface changes from one to to other within the space of a stride

Sadly the animals would be unhappy if we did so....
(Today in the field, I discovered a whole new type of slippery surface, being rock solid ground with a thin skim of very liquid mud. My balancing skills were defeated, but I didn't do much damage other than muddy hands. I did feel slightly better when I later watched GB spend a minute or so trying to move from the spot in the same conditions.)
