Losing an illusion makes you wiser than finding a truth.
--- Ludwig Börne

Though they are regarded as synonyms, the medical definitions of crying and weeping are not the same.  A person can cry with out making a sound, the only physical symptom being tears.  Likewise, a baby can cry without tears, making noise to signal hunger, pain or a need for sleep.  Crying can being quickly and end just as abruptly.

Weeping has physical symptoms.  Conjunctival veins are dilated, the nose gets red, and the eyelids are swollen. In weeping of a long duration, the whole face gets swollen.  These are accompanied by facial changes.  The corners of the mouth are drawn downwards, the brow is puckered, and the eyes, usually partially closed.
The medical definition does not include a description of the audible difference between weeping and crying.  But once weeping has fallen on a set of ears, the ears know the difference.

When George walked into the on call room, he had told himself he was not going to do two things.  He would not touch her.  He would not look at her.

He almost succeeded in doing one.

His eyes were closed, but he knew she was on the floor.  He could hear her.  And until the day he died, George would not forget the sound she was making.  Because he had done that to her.

It was like she was being murdered, like some invisible thing was ripping or burning her skin from her body.  The noise was somehow traveling though George's ear drum, down his neck and into his chest, then squeezing his heart with two large fists, until it was crushed and broken and non-existent.

He didn't know how is happened and neither did she.  But then he was on the floor next to her, and then his hand was hooked around her back and another at the back of her head.  Their legs were tangled together, and they weren't exactly sitting but they weren't exactly lying either.

They were clinging to each other with so much desperation, each choking and gasping without an ounce of control, so much so that it could be confused with laughter.  Her face was buried in his shoulder, his in her neck, his lips against her skin, not kissing her, but she felt them there.  And she felt his words more than she heard them.  "I'm sorry."

One of her hands slipped under his shirt, sliding across his back, and then his nose was buried in her hair and there was no question about what his lips were doing to her neck.  Both of there breathing was beginning to return to normal, as they fought for air but the tears continued to fall.

The door opened and light poured in on them along with an unmistakable silhouette.  She was kind enough to turn her head into the hall as she cleared her throat.  "Stevens, I need you in the clinic because Yang is scrubbing in with Sheperd."

Two nurses passed the door, peering in at the two interns tangled up in each other on the floor of an on call room, raising their eyebrows at what it looked like they were seeing.

Izzie peeled herself off the floor, wiping her eyes furiously.  "Yes Dr. Bailey."  She scooted out of the room and George was right behind her.

"O'Malley."

"Yes Dr. Bailey."

"If this is about your father and you need sometime, a couple of days, you let me know."  George almost thanked her but, as he'd come to expect, Bailey was not done.

She walked toward him and lowered her voice.  "But if that is something else, I suggest you handle it before the vultures start to circle, because those walls are thin and I was not the first person to walk past that door.  I don't need the personal lives of my interns distracting the rest of this hospital staff again."

"Yes Dr. Bailey.  I understand."

"Good.  Now go find Dr. Burke."

~*--------------------*~

A great majority of the hospital staff that witnessed "The Fight" (as it was called for the next 4 days), could not say what had led Dr. Torres to scream exactly what she did.  No one had been listening that closely.  Popular reports had it that Dr. O'Malley had been stumbling behind her, mumbling something about "going somewhere" so they could "talk", and his wife, speaking easily over him urging him to "just say it" because that afternoon "she had heard it all".  The intern had said something about privacy and that's when it had happened.  The entire staff could repeat it verbaitum only 4 hours later.

"You were on the floor in her arms, what else could there be?  Unless you had sex with her, it can't get any worse!"  There was a pause here, during which everything became still and she looked into his eyes.  And then her hand cracked against his face and her footsteps echoed down the hall.
