Jamaica, mon.

I am in Jamaica and I've been here for over 24 hours now... in a lovely 4-bedroom villa in Discovery Bay with norwoodbridge, his kids, his mom, his sister, his sister's husband and their kids. Currently sitting out on the verandah watching the lights reflect on the bay, and avoiding the bustle. I'm basically here because Norwood's mom was renting this villa as a family getaway thing, so all I had to do was buy plane tickets. I was pretty woozy when I got here yesterday after about an hour of sleep, but 11.5 hours of snoozing and listening to the surf has restored me completely. :)

It's more of a real vacation than I usually take, because the wifi is shitty and there is no way to be really efficient with time, here -- I blame this last thing even more on the size of the group and existence of children then on the wifi, although Jamaican culture doesn't help either.

At any rate, today we went and climbed Dunn's River Falls, which is a long and tumbling waterfall with freakishly wonderful, high-traction rocks; basically the waterfall Dr. Seuss would have drawn, I think, if there were water spilling over all those pillows in I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew. I got my hair half-cornrowed, ate jerk chicken, sipped some beer I might actually sorta like (!), and bought some real Blue Mountain coffee to bring home. Oh, also some pepper shrimp since apfelsingail told me to keep an eye out for them, although they were not what I expected and I haven't tried them yet.

I've finally started a tiny recreational programming project in Go, along with buying a Kindle book on the language. I'm stumbling over all kinds of weird little things; no book on how a language works ever prepares you for what the different error messages mean, and the whole thing is really less based on C than I thought (arrays are weird). Still, it feels good to work this stuff out. I've always had a fondness for no-pressure left-brained stuff while on vacation. I'm also about halfway through The Bone Clocks, which is not exactly a light read either.

I'm here until Friday morning. Still on the agenda: beginning scuba diving class tomorrow, and getting a beach handstand picture 'cause that's just obligatory. Also, lots more sleeping and listening to the surf.
