Dear Crossovering Writer...

Jul 19, 2017 06:13

Hello, and thank you for volunteering to create a gift for the Crossovering exchange. I'm delighted that we share similar fandoms and interests and hope that you have fun creating a gift for me. I am super-duper-extra excited about the exhcange this year because of the expansion of allowed fandoms.

I love love love love LOVE crossovers and am so delighted to have extra fandoms this year. So really, you can't go wrong here. Write a story that you enjoy writing and I'm sure I'll love it and enjoy reading it. In an effort to help, I'll tell you my general likes/dislikes and also give a few prompts for the requested fandom combos.

But above all, have fun. If you find that the suggestions feel like a burden, then ignore them and write something that interests you. True passion shines through and makes a story special. The only thing I ask is that you steer clear of my Do-Not-Wants.

And I have to say - handwave all you need to get the universes crossed over. Don't feel like you have to write 1000 words of setup to get the characters in the right places. One line in a summary to set the scene is all I need!

I like...
angst, UST, longing looks, the 5+1 format, long-repressed feelings that explode one day, kid fic, roads not taken in canon, zombies, wacky road trips, old friends, handsome strangers, ghost stories, crazy decisions that are right even though they seem so very wrong, 2nd person narratives, porn that reveals more than just naked bodies, unreliable narrators, opening your presents on Christmas Day rather than Christmas Eve, and long deep slow kisses that last three days.

I do not want..
passivity, first-person narration, incest, non-con, non-canon slash, porn without plot, child death or grevious injury, and misusing the words less and fewer.

What I love about each fandom:

Supernatural
Completion: Only through Season 5.
Favorite characters: Sam, Dean, Castiel
Favorite thing about the show: Brotherly banter, backstories and creation of a believable universe

Completion:
Favorite characters:
Favorite thing about the show:

Harry Potter (books)
Completion: All books.
Favorite characters: Lupin, Tonks, Mrs. Weasley, Luna Lovegood
Favorite thing about the books: The believable universe - who doesn't want to go to Hogwarts?

Orange is the New Black
Completion: Seen all seasons, including the one that was released last month.
Favorite characters: Miss Rosa, Poussey, Taystee, Red, Nicky, Daya, Gloria, Frieda, and Stella.
Favorite thing about the show: The characters and their relationships. How they try to maintain their humanity in an inhumane situation.

Star Wars: The Original Trilogy/Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Completion: All films. Not a fan of or super-knowledgeable about the prequel trilogy.
Favorite characters: Leia, Han, Rey, Finn, BB8, R2D2, and Chewbacca.
Favorite thing about the movies: The action and humor. The witty banter. The universe.

Fargo
Completion: All seasons, but I barely remember season 2.
Favorite characters: Gloria Burgle, Winnie Lopez, Nikki Swango, Molly Solverson, Gus Grimly, Lou Solverson, Mr. Wrench
Favorite thing about the show: The tension and the slow development of the characters. I also love the way the characters find their way through situations that they don't really understand.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Completion: All seaons.
Favorite characters: Rebecca, Paula, Heather, Naomi, Darryl
Favorite thing about the show: Rebecca and her manic energy, also her relationships with her friends. The songs are awesome too, as is the sense of humor.

Saving Grace
Completion: All seaons.
Favorite characters: Grace, Ham, Rhetta
Favorite thing about the show: I love this show and I often request it in exchanges because there's just not enough fic for it. I love Grace and her sassy spirit. I love her friendship with Rhetta and her on/off thing with Ham. I always shipped Grace and Ham, particularly self-destructive!Grace and emo-caring-but-still-super-sexy!Ham. I hate the ending of the series with the fiery passion of 1000 suns, so feel free to ignore it.

Sons of Anarchy
Completion: All seaons
Favorite characters: Jax, Chibbs, Half-Sack, Tara
Favorite thing about the show: Oh Sons. It had such great potential in the first two seasons, then kind of went off the rails. But I love the characters and their relationships. (Are you sensing a theme here? :)) I love the themes of brotherhood and family.

Riverdale
Completion: All episodes.
Favorite characters: Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead. Also love Cheryl as an agent of chaos.
Favorite thing about the show: The creepy atmosphere.

Stranger Things
Completion: All episodes.
Favorite characters: Joyce, Hopper, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Eleven.
Favorite thing about the show: The creepy atmosphere. The perfect re-creation of an early-80s world. The relationships between the kids.

Friday Night Lights
Completion: All seasons - many, many times.
Favorite characters: Tim, Julie, Coach, Tami
Favorite thing about the show: The characters and their relationships with each other. The realistic depiction of life.

As I'm reading over what I've written, I realize that it's the characters and their relationships that kindle my love for a show, book, or movie. (I suspect this interest is why I tend not to love movies, because the condensed time frame doesn't give me enough time to fall in love with the characters.)

General prompts that would apply to any combo:

  • A natural or manmade disaster strikes and characters must work together to save themselves and others
  • AU - The Zombie Apocalypse strikes - what is life like and how do the characters manage?
  • Wacky roadtrip, a la "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles"
  • Character backstories - I love a good backstory, especially when it has crossover implications
  • The road not taken...what happens when a character makes a different decision than in canon. How does the story (and more importantly, the character) change as a result of the decision.
  • First times - first kisses, first loves, first day of school/prison/the army/whatever
  • 5+1 (As in Five times X happened and 1 time it didn't) is a tried and true format - I'd eat any 5+1 with a spoon. (And it doesn't have to be 5 +1, it could be 3 or 7 or whatever works for you.)
  • Song fic - I don't even need to know the song. (But if you're a fan of The National, you literally cannot go wrong with any of their songs.)
Sons of Anarchy/Fargo
  • The Sons arrive to open up a chapter in St Cloud. What happens next?
  • The intrepid Winnie Lopez is following a lead that takes her straight into the Sons' clubhouse. She calls in Gloria for backup and moral support.
  • Bonus points if you can get Molly Solverson into the story
Friday Night Lights/Harry Potter
  • Someone in Dillon learns late that he or she is a a wizard and brings some friends home after the first term at Hogwarts.
  • Something goes wrong with a portal and someone (or a few someones) end up stuck in Dillon.
Riverdale/Sons of Anarchy
  • The Serpents call in a friendly club to help out with a problem, and Cheryl can't stop thinking about one of the new arrivals.
  • Betty and Jughead's investigations of the Serpents uncover a connection with some new strangers in town. These guys seem way more dangerous and serious.
Stranger Things/Supernatural
  • I see this crossover working one of two ways - Dean and Sam as children in Hawkins because John is taking a job there (I know the math doesn't work but I am so okay with it) or some kind of handwaving that has Dean and Sam as adults in the early 80s.
  • Dean and Sam (or John) has never seen anything as creepy as what's going on in Hawkins. It's clear their usual bag of tricks is not going to work.
Saving Grace/Supernatural
  • Dean and Grace cross paths on a difficult case. And they can only agree on one thing: angels are total dicks.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend/Friday Night Lights
  • Rachel takes a sabbatical and picks up a long-term substitute teaching gig in Dillon High School.
  • Tyra has a JD from the University of Texas and a chip on her shoulder. Also, she hates her new boss, a scatterbrain who can't stop singing.
Fargo/Saving Grace
  • I just want to see Grace and Winnie, Gloria, and Molly solving crimes and being awesome together. I don't care how it happens.
Orange is the New Black/Fargo
  • What happens when Nikki Swango ends up in Litchfield?
  • Gloria and Winni have to escort a federal prisoner.

Star Wars Original Trilogy/Leverage/The Force Awakens

  • Handwave to get the Leverage crew into the Star Wars universe, then tell me about how the Leverage team stole the Empire for their client Princess/General Leia.

Star Wars Original Trilogy/Supernatural/The Force Awakens

  • The Supernatural guys are tricked into a portal, that takes them to the Star Wars universe. They enlist the services of a certain shady smuggler to get back to their Earth. (Zomg, the idea of Dean and Han together is comedy gold.)
