this is how i spend my holidays

Eating. So I've finally decided to abandon all concerns about stomach flab and subscribed to what The Age dubbed the best vanilla slice in Melbourne. It turns out that the cafe selling that is just a short half-an-hour walk away from my humble home, hence since I have nothing to do this lazy Saturday noon I went there.

The French Lettuce
, 237 Nicholson Street.

From the name, sounds like something of a snotty expensive-as-hell kinda cafe, but no, the price range's pretty okay. So I entered and what I saw:

They had these pretty pretty looking delicate macarons ;_; it touches my heart of hearts. In the end I stayed faithful to my original aim: buy just one vanilla slice though it was really really hard and I stood there for a really long time until the lady behind the counter was staring at me like o.o

So, vanilla slice:

Ah, the beauty of cream. It lives up to its reputation, I suppose. $5 isn't bad for a 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm slab of pastry and oh wow the pastry. I can actually hear the crunch of the pastry when I broke it with my fork and it's so crispy and crunchy and omg PASTRY. And the custard actually tastes of vanilla, unlike some varieties of vanilla slices they sell in 7-11.

I didn't manage to finish it, though. It's too heavy to be eaten in one sitting, I guess. But as custards go this one's pretty light and not too sweet, which is a plus, but what made it for me was the PASTRY. Did I mention the PASTRY? B-because, the PASTRY, God.
tl;dr: would buy again if not for my goal of dessert shop-hopping. Next stop, probably somewhere around Flinders. Or Brunetti. Gah, Brunetti.
