One of the most annoying things about the Internet is that you will occasionally find out about a really cool fan project, by way of its official cancellation. Such is the case with Crimson Echoes, a fan-sequel to Chrono Trigger created by hacking the original ROM file.
The mod has been in development for five years and boasted an impressive 35 hours of gameplay and 10 separate endings. The game was about 98 percent complete and well on its way to meet its May 31 release date. Then on May 8, Square-Enix sent the game's developers a cease and desist letter, which not only demanded that they cease work on the game, but also that they pull all the other fan mods on
Chrono Compendium, the website that hosted the project.
While this wouldn't be the
first time Square-Enix has shut down a Chrono Trigger fan project (or even the
second time, for that matter), it doesn't make this shut down any less depressing. Sure, they're well within their rights to shut down the project. Seeing as there hasn't been a new Chrono Trigger game for
almost 15 years though, it almost feels cruel for them to squash this little fan sequel this close to its completion.
Would this fan mod have lived up to expectations? Who can say really? I honestly can't, because I never heard of the project before today. The developers plan to at least release videos of the game. That way we will at least get to dream of things that were never meant to be...
