Rom Check Anti-Fails
After looking over some of my more recent posts, one might get the impression that I dislike indie gaming, when I simply dislike overly pretentious ones. Not all indie games are pretentious, and there are even some that can examine genre conventions of video games while being totally awesome. Case in point: a short little game called Rom Check Fail
The best description of the game I can think of (or more accurately, paraphrase about the game) is Wario Ware meets "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)".
The objective of the game is to proceed through 20 stages by killing all the enemies in a stage. Seem reasonable enough, doesn't it?
The catch you are basically playing broken arcade machine that's mixed up the assets of various games. This means you can be controlling Mario, while trying to jump on the vector-line Asteroids, on an Arkanoid-esque background, to the music from Bubble Bobble.
The other catch is the game is constantly glitching, which happens randomly and changes everything in the game to something else. So in our theoretical gaming scenario, the game could glitch and suddenly you are now controlling the car from Spy Hunter, the enemies are Goombas, the background is using a Pac-Man tile-set, and the music from Double Dragon is playing.
As you get further into the game the glitches come more frequently, which forces you to be ready to change strategies at a drop of a hat, and that is the brilliance of the game. Like Wario Ware it throws you into scenarios that require quick reflexes an innate gaming knowledge. The game doesn't need to tell you that you need to jump on whatever enemies you're facing as Mario, because you that already.
The game itself is free, and only takes a moment to install, so I highly recommend it. If nothing here has convinced you, then know that you have to play it for the ending is a thing of glory.
