It appears that some of the news I talked about yesterday may not be quite as awesome as initially advertised.

You see it has just been pointed out to me that Nintendo only mentioned downloading directly to an SD. Thinking this must be some sort of oversight, I went back and combed a bit more carefully over the press releases, but I fount not one of the speakers ever actually said that people could play directly off of an SD card. In fact, the only vague mention I found of it in a transcript of Iwata's speech seemed to indicate the opposite (note that all italics are mine):

We will make it so that, when there is not enough room on the Wii's internal memory, you will be able to purchase and download Virtual Console and WiiWare software directly from the Shopping Channel to an SD memory card. We will also make it so that you will need to go through just one process in order to transfer Virtual Console or WiiWare software stored on an SD card to the Wii console and then be able to play it.

While I would appreciate it if it was easier to copy things back and forth from an SD card (as it is, the process takes way too long for larger games and the save files must be copied separately) it would only really solve half of the problem.

The full transcript of the speach can be found here.

not awesome, nintendo
