Either there are two books with a protagonist who mainlines The Seven Samurai as background to their life, or I'm hallucinating. Because the one I remember browsing years ago was about a teenaged boy in America, not a single Mum in England. I have Seven Samurai on a disk that a grateful parent made for me, so the viewinge xperience can be your some day. At three and a half hours ('half an hour per samurai') it definitely requires a pause button, though there wasn't one the first two times I saw the uncut version. Also benefits from a movie theatre, though again the first time I saw it was on TV, back in the days when there wasn't a complete commercial version over here and PBS made one.

Vetinari and the golems are indeed cool. The one so practical and amoral, the other so practical and the reverse. Book reviews or first impressions or whatever can wait till you don't have sixteen things on your plate, I'd think; but I'm glad you didn't stop at book one and say Not my cuppa.
