My favourite book is The Time Traveler's Wife. It has been since I read it. I own two copies, my battered read-it-90-times one with loose pages and one in case the first ever busts itself up too badly. It's been in the process of becoming a movie for years now and the first trailer is finally out.
*****The rest of this post is full of spoilers, if you haven't read the book and ever intend to, do not read this****
I'm trying to figure out wether or not it will be acceptable enough to me to go see. I am curious about the changes they've made. But the trailer has a few elements that are bothering me a little.
1. Clare's lines. In the book she doesn't say "no" to his marriage proposal, the proposal wasn't in BED for chrissakes and the whole moment seemed to be funny, rather than serious. Also when they're in the house and Henry asks if "it's too weird" and she responds "i think it's kind of magical". In the novel the attitude towards any of his time travel was very much that it was dangerous and difficult and an issue and eventually it is responsible for many of the most painful things in Clare's life.
2. When Henry tells Clare what they name their daughter. The book was very clear about Henry not telling Clare anything she didn't already know because it caused issues. They name their daughter before Henry ever meets her.
3.Rachel McAdams just isn't working for me as Clare. At all. Clare in the novel is smart and brave and Rachel is kind of dopey in the role. Eric Bana is actually perfect, though, which is one of the reasons I'm now interested in seeing it.
4. I read an interview about the script writing where they said they've purposely made it less dark than the book. Why? What for? The difficult parts of the novel were the parts that made it worth reading in the first place. I also wonder what they mean by "less dark". There are a few things that they could omit and all of the ones I can think of severely alter the plot and not in a good way. More in a confusing way.
5. A couple of important people have just been removed, which happens but I wonder how they fill the void there.
I get that it can't be the same. They can't film the book exactly. I get it.
But if you don't want to make a sad as hell movie, don't film a sad as hell book.
