Once upon a time there were five girls, who for various reasons had always been alone. But one day, as if by fate, they all started to meet each other, and they became friends. Later on, they befriended a younger girl, and the six of them spent their schooldays full of happy times. There were sad times, too, but in the end it was all worth it, because they weren't alone anymore.
Sounds like the story of Sailormoon, doesn't it? Five girls, the Sailor Team, and later on a younger girl, Chibiusa, joins them. But it's actually the story of my friendships in high school, albeit a little exaggerated to make it sound more like the Sailormoon story. :D
Today I was listening to Kirari*Sailor Dream in the car, and it reminded me of the fact that I will always connect Sailormoon with my happy times in high school. Part of Sailormoon is about the fact that Usagi brings together these four girls who had always been alone, and the fact that their friendship triumphs over everything.
I had always been alone for the most part before high school. I didn't know what true friendship was like. I went to John Carroll because I was running away from Perry Hall Middle. I was running away from those "friendships" that hurt me.
I think I met Ray first. Ray was the person who introduced me to the others. She and I were in band and chorus together from the beginning. We shared a love of music and a love of fun. I remember how we would go to the band room on our mods off and practice the band music.
I don't remember who I met next. I'll talk about Lauren. She was in chorus all four years with me. She was (and still is) an excellent artist and writer and I always eagerly looked forward to seeing her work.
Linny was also in chorus with me all four years. She was (and still is) an amazing artist, too. She was going to make a comic about the six of us, but that didn't get very far off the ground. The concept sketches were awesome, though.
Meg was in band with me all four years. She joined chorus sophomore year, and the five of us were in chorus together from there on in. Meg always knew the right things to say and sometimes knew myself better than I did.
Bridget joined us two years later when she entered high school and the band and chorus. She was a true country girl at heart who loved horses and country music. You could always count on her to be singing randomly in the hallways. When she wasn't singing, she was laughing her infectious laugh.
These five girls were a major part of why high school was such a good time of my life for me. For the first time in my life, I had true friendship. These were people who loved me for who I was. They didn't mind the fact that I was a little odd as other people had minded. Instead, they embraced me for it.
Although we're not as close anymore, I still treasure these people with all my heart. I love you all. Thank you so much for being the first to show me what true friendship is.
