Disclaimer: Nothing of Prison Break is mine...new episodes tomorrow!!
The first time he sees his younger son, it’s in a darkened room, but he can still see the cuts and the bruises. That first time, Michael is scared to see him in the doorway, and scared to see the man who beat him dead on the floor. That first time does not go well.
He knows that if he were stronger, if he were smarter and braver, he would have figured out a way to keep his family safe without leaving them behind. And the second time he sees Michael, he hears that his son knows it, too. That second time, he sees that his son is stronger, smarter, and braver. That second time does not go well.
The first time he sees Lincoln, after twenty odd years, it’s an execution and a car wreck. All things considered, it goes fairly well.
The second time he sees Lincoln, he meets his grandson, and feels like a circle has closed within his chest. His son has raised a son who loves him, who knows him, and Aldo sees a bond in them he gave up years ago. He sees the strength of a bond in all of them, forgotten but never broken.
He spends only a few short hours with his sons. It’s not enough time to get to know them again. It’s not enough time to learn what kind of men they have become, it’s not enough time to show them what kind of man they came from, and it’s not enough time to ask for forgiveness. It’s not enough time.
But in the back of a car, while he’s dying, he has it all. He has knowledge, and he has forgiveness. He has the life he only dreamt about in a few short minutes. They would give themselves up for him, even after everything. They would sacrifice not only their freedom, but potentially their lives. In the back of a car, while he lives his last moments, he feels more like a father than he ever had before.
