Indeed they are. They certainly keep one on one's feet at all times. They could 'evolve' at any moment, I've heard.

Yeah, they might. There are many different ways to evolve a Pokémon. Through experience, stones and happiness at least... using a stone will determine when the Pokémon evolves, the others might be rather sudden.

Happiness? How strange-- and in that case, does the Pokémon simply decide when it will evolve, based on how it feels about its Trainer? [ It's all rather interesting, how they evolve. ]

I think so. I have yet to encounter the method myself.
