Almost six years after SARS took hold in Toronto hospitals, victims and their families are finally being heard.

Patients, nurses and the families affected by the deadly disease were in court Wednesday arguing the province put tourism and the economy ahead of fighting SARS.

Specifically, they say the Ontario government relaxed infection control procedures too soon so it could reverse a travel advisory that advised tourists against visiting Toronto - a move that may have resulted in preventable deaths.

The province claims they can't be sued for failing to stop the spread of the disease, and are asking the Court of Appeal to throw out the five lawsuits that have been filed on behalf of the dozens who were infected, including 53 health care workers.

( SARS, or Severe acute respiratory syndrome, was first reported in Asia in February 2003... )
