I'm sick

Of hearing about the cliche vegetarian's moral crusade explanation for why they have given up eating animal flesh. I don't give a shit what you eat. I just want you to realize that your diet is hurting living things. More than if you continued to eat meat. Or began to support free range animals and boycott bovine growth hormone instead. I'm all ( Read more... )

not an attack on vegetarians, especially ones in this convo, but this is how i see a few things... the_navel June 9 2007, 21:06:20 UTC
"I'm tired of people who don't know me giving me shit because they think that I truly believe I am a saint."
these people suck and are just as self-righteous as they believe you to be.

it's hard to be a cautious eater around here, there is no longer that direct link to our food anymore, fast foods, frozen foods, fancy restraunt foods all have something in common - we only see the outcome of what we're eating, for so long we've trusted the people that put together our food for us to have morals and a conscience on so many levels(not just how they treat the meat).
mostly what saddens me about this subject though are the titles "vegan" and "vegetarian". they make me sad because they are labels that can possibly build walls, why would anyone want to label themselves? maybe it's empowering for the will to continue the diet but as i see it it's crippling man. and definitive. eat anyway you want, just be wary and know that if your going to pin a word on your forehead others will see it how they will. take "straightedge" for example, wasn't there once a time when not having drugs, drink, or intercourse was just called abstinence? there are great people i know who refrain from drinking and the like for whatever reason they chose who do not wear any black hoodies that say "poison" on one side of the zipper and "free" on the other. these folks who keep mostly to themselves about their convictions not only have a respectably strong will but more importantly practice humility by not showing unnecessary amounts of pride sometimes associated with elitism. one day i'd like to meet a person with a vegan or vegetarian diet who goes about this way. i am not defined by how i eat(well, besides being a "fatass") and no one should be, healthy eating is healthy eating anyway you cut it. saving the world is a whole other livejournal entry.

I think the labeling is a definite issue. If anyone offers me meat I just say no thank you. I don't want to say "NO I'M A VEGETARIAN" because then I sound like a total douchebag. When I first stopped eating meat I did feel really good about it though and it is empowering to have the will power. It's just like if someone stops smoking after doing it every day for twenty years. It's a nice feeling but I don't need a shirt declaring it.
I wouldn't say it's crippling either, for me, mainly because my diet is just SO many times better now. I seriously lived off of the BK Value menu before and now I make everything myself at home and it's really opened up my mind to such great food. I had enough heart problems as is so pounding down whoppers wasn't helping.
