Dead Beside The Thames

The 9th book in the Casebook of Barnaby Adair mystery series by Stephanie Laurens, Dead Beside The Thames, was released on Thursday and I started reading it immediately. The book takes place in September, 1840. The Scooby team (Stokes, Barnaby and Penelope Adair) is, as usual, arch, especially Penelope Adair. There were 31 grimaces, 18 huffs and 6 faces pulled.

The mystery in this book was interesting-who killed Viscount Sedbury-and I liked how it was resolved without an arrest.

Highlights:

  • My favorite scene was when Penelope attended the St. Ives House at-home to gather information:  Those present included three of the ton’s more ancient grandes dames-Helena, Dowager Duchess of St. Ives, Lady Horatia Cynster, and the redoubtable Lady Osbaldestone.
  • Stokes attends breakfast at the Adair house so often that the butler, Mostyn, lays a third place setting just in case Stokes turned up.
