Fic Exchanges: Notes about my preferences

Sep 23, 2012 17:55

Hi! If you're participating in a fic exchange (such as The Secret Coconut and the Saint Seiya Crossover Festival from stseiya_fanfics) and you're my gifter, I hope that this post will help you understand my preferences. :-)

When writing about Saint Seiya, please base yourself on the anime, and forget about Lost Canvas, Next Dimension and Episode G. I prefer post-Hades stories. As Saint Seiya is really a story about deities, it should be easy enough to find a way to bring all characters back to life, so that you can use them in your fic. On the other hand, if a prompt of mine makes it really difficult to write a post-Hades fic, and if you really want to use said prompt, feel free to set the story in another appropriate era.

If you write about Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica or Natsume Yuujinchou, please use the respective anime series as a reference. I'm not familiar enough with their manga versions.

If you write about Skip Beat! or Fullmetal Alchemist, you can base yourself either on the manga or the anime, whichever you prefer.

If you write about Harry Potter, base your fic solely on the books and please ignore the movies, Pottermore and other sources. Also, if you can disregard the epilogue, I'll be very grateful to you.

If you write about The Mentalist and want to disregard the solution to the Red John mystery and/or the subsequent series' reboot, be my guest.

No cursing, please; I don't like to see foul language in fanfics. Absolutely no slut-shaming! In other words, don't call a woman bad names just because she enjoys sex, and please refrain from using gender-biased words that carry a sexist, negative connotation, such as “bitch” and “whore” and any equivalents to those in any language. It's acceptable to offend a woman within the context of your story if this is appropriate to the plot, but please use neutral offenses instead of gender-biased ones. Think about it: nobody ever uses gender-biased offenses that imply a negative judgement of men who enjoy sex, right? So, why should women take this kind of crap?

I really hate the old cliche that says that an unhappy or angry or evil woman needs to have sex to get better. This crappy misogynistic claim is a poor form of argumentation that only the incompetent use. Besides, this is an incredibly harmful stereotype that perpetuates the wrong notion that a woman needs to have a man by her side to be complete. So, please, don't write me anything that supports that despicable cliche in any way.

Please keep in mind that I'm not really interested in getting a fic that contains yaoi. Please don't include yaoi pairings in the story, don't imply or suggest yaoi in any way, don't use the fic to convey yaoi-related messages etc. Gen, het and yuri are totally fine, because it's way more common to see female characters getting a fair treatment in fics that belong in any of these genres.

Fandom as a whole often erases or bashes female characters, or dismisses them as less important than the male ones, or labels them as “boring,” “uninteresting” and other absurd things. This problem is even more serious in Saint Seiya fandom, because the vast majority of Saint Seiya fans tends to be sexist and misogynistic; some StS fans even seem to take pride in their discrimination against female characters. I'm sick of all this bullshit. So, if you write me a fic that fully respects all female characters (no matter if they are good or evil, no matter if they are the protagonists or if they're just mentioned in passing), you will make me very happy!

Please be extremely careful of how you depict Saori Kido and Chameleon June. Don't try to erase these characters, don't bash them, don't deny their importance, and please, write good scenes and dialogue lines for them. I love these girls, and I find it disgusting to see how poorly fandom tends to treat them. So, a fic that goes against the tide and gives Saoi or June a good treatment would be a wonderful gift for me! When it comes to ships, I'd rather see Saori with someone other than Seiya, such as Julian Solo, Gemini Saga and Unicorn Jabu (or a female character, because I like yuri). As for June, I'd love to see Shun have a happy ending with her following a cute romance. I won't accept any other pairings for Shun; June is the only acceptable partner for him.

Regardless of my emphasis on female characters above, I like male characters as well. After all, I often submit prompts centered around men, and open prompts that give you the chance to write about men too. Choose whatever makes you feel more comfortable.

If there's anything else that you need to know about my preferences, please contact the admins and ask them to send me your questions, which I'll be very glad to answer.

Thank you very much for writing me a fic! I can't hardly wait to read your story, as I'm sure that you're going to do a great job. ^______^
