These grabbed hours between shifts that seem to get busier the closer it gets to Christmas are the most important hours of their day, Greg thinks. Just for sleeping, catching up with family, getting away from the job. Watching a hockey game with a friend is one of his favorite releases and Ed's always happy to oblige him. Tonight it's the Leafs taking on the Caps, and they're both sat side by side on Greg's couch in their blue home jerseys talking about how the younger players are starting to shape up at last. Both of them thinking that it makes them feel old to see these twenty-somethings destroying the ice and the opposing team. Sure, Greg and Ed could still strap on their skates and get around the rink a few times, although Greg has a sneaking suspicion that Ed would run rings around him these days.

When he says as much, though, Ed just elbows him in the ribs and calls him an idiot.

"You're not that much older than me, you cantankerous ass," he tells him.

"A few months and a few pounds can make all the difference," Greg retorts.

Then they both shut up because the break's finally over and the second period is about to start. Toskala's in goal and the Leafs are down by two to nothing, but Greg's not letting it faze him. It's not been the best season for their team, they'll both admit that, but it's not like it matters what the score is at the end. What matters is that they're sat here, together, losing themselves in the game they love and in one another's company, which is some kind of love all by itself. At least, Greg tells himself that every time Ed leaves without knowing what he's really thinking about. He has to make do with this, pretend to himself that it's enough.

"Do you want another soda?" he asks, as the players get in position for the face-off.

"I'm good," Ed says, lifting the bottle he already has and sloshing the contents around to prove it's still half full. "Somethin' up with you?"

Greg shakes his head, settles back on the couch. He's annoyed at himself for getting distracted every time the game's on hold. If he drank, this might not be so much of a problem, but he doesn't and so it is. Ed's right there and oblivious, the heat of his body warming Greg up, and it's taking all of his willpower not to start blurting things out.

Then Stajan scores and Ed pretty much hits Greg in the chest and is out of his seat, cheering at the TV like an overexcited child. Greg watches him, but stays where he is with an amused half-smile on his face at his friend's antics.

"You sure you didn't spike that coke?" he wants to know, as Ed sits back down. His friend pats his knee with a puzzled laugh that dies out when he realizes how still Greg is.

"Did I miss some shift in the universe where our team scoring isn't a good thing?"

Greg looks at him and there must be something in his eyes that's too obvious, something he hasn't managed to hide, because Ed's sitting back and looking a lot more careful than he did a second ago.

"What's going on?"

Greg's about to say 'nothing', but Ed's expression tells him that he doesn't want him to lie.

"C'mon, Greg. We don't have secrets. I know everything about you."

"Not everything," Greg mutters.

"So tell me something new."

And Greg does.
