A/N: Response to Weekly Drabble Challenge #52 at doctor_donna

This is what happens when I watch Journey’s End again.

The Doctor stands far enough back, not wanting to disturb her and break the spell. They are standing on a pebbled beach; the lake is large and smooth and shines like black glass, silent boats filled with empty people waft along the still waters.

He shoves his hands deeper into his pockets, the feeling of guilt wash over him like the calm waves lapping at the stones beneath his trainers, he wishes he could go back and fix things, the irony stings him; with all of time at his fingertips, he cannot go back and undo anything.

Its better this way, he tries to make himself believe that, to force that horrible truth down his throat and he nearly chokes.

“I’m sorry.” He whispers.

She doesn’t answer, she never does.

He makes a tentative step forward, the rocks shift and she turns her and he only manages to catch a glimpse of those blue eyes before her ghost is swept away with a gentle sigh of the wind.
