I don't often talk about my epic tv-show love in this journal, which is unfortunate, since I thoroughly enjoy my tv-series'.
It's pretty rare for me to get behind any canon het pairing in TV-shows. I often find them boring to be honest, contrived and for some reason, tv-writers seem to have troubles creating interesting and unique dynamics between canon couples. However, I'm pretty shameless with my House/Cuddy love purely for the fact that they're awesome and so, so well written and, really, she's the only female cast member that can match him in snark. The fact that they're both smoking hot as well helps. I know that, as of this week, people tend to be either super, super against the finale, or super, super for it, especially from a Huddy perspective.
Anyway, I loved it. Like, so much love. Looking back over this series, the level and intensity of character growth from the entire cast has been exponential. I mean, I love this show for the cases and the snark, but also because I honestly think it has some of the best and most interesting characters on tv right now. The level of growth particularly in characters like House, Cuddy, Wilson and Cameron (Far out, I actually liked her this season) as well as Kutner (;_____;) and Taub was so well done.
But okay, let's jump back a little. Cameron. I’ve never been a Cameron fan. I hated the House/Cameron thing that they were trying to set up early in the show, and I’ve always found her boring and needy and that whole ‘trying-to-fix everything’ act just rubbed me the wrong way. I think that’s why the last few episodes of this series affected me so much in terms of her character. The fact that she’d kept her dead husband’s sperm totally altered her persona; suddenly she was the one that needed fixing. She was the one that was damaged and hurt, and unable to let go of something, and I’d always kind of suspected that was the direction they’d take her character, but they did a really good job of it. I didn’t want her to have a break-down, it would’ve been predictable and contrived, but what they did instead, just those glimpses of intense need and insecurity and vulnerability, made me like her, and what’s more, I understood her. It was great.
And okay, the House/Cuddy thing. My heart, oh my goodness. I adored what they did, it was so, so perfect. From ‘Joy’ to the finale, the direction they took that relationship, in all of its destructiveness and hurting and unrequitedness was so, so in character and perfect. There’s been so much bitchiness about Fox’s ‘for the Huddy fans’ promo and the fact that it was all a hallucination, but I didn’t even care. I mentioned at
house_cuddy that I thought it was very well done, and that House’s realisation that he wanted a relationship with Cuddy was the emotional equivalent to having sex, hence the hallucination made sense on that level. It would’ve been easy for the writer’s just to have House and Cuddy fuck (and really, I think that probably would’ve ruined a lot of their chemistry), but they did it the hard way. Instead, they took House, an incredibly shut-off, emotionally unstable (retarded) character, and made him have what was essentially an epiphany. In the words of Cuddy in an earlier episode, everyone knew that this was going somewhere. They have more chemistry than any of the openly canon pairings on the show (Chase/Cameron, Foreman/Thirteen, hell, even House/Stacey), and the final few episodes of this series was a very House way of coming clean with how he felt about her, and the fact that he clearly wants not only a pain-free life, but a pain-free life with Cuddy.
Also, for the sake of argument, I know people were entirely up in arms about the hallucination stuff, but you know what? Everything House said in his hallucination, from the “I always want to kiss you” line to everything else, hey, he still said it. So stfu about all this “FOX IS MAKING FUN OF US AS HUDDY FANS!!1!” bullshit. Jfc.
So yeah, I heart the finale, and I’m really interested to see this psych ward arc they’ve set up for next season.
Gossip Girl?
Okay, season’s not officially over yet, but I have feelings~ and since I was writing about House, I figured I should get these out of the way too. Gossip Girl? Yeah, generally sucks at canon het pairings. Seriously, epic fail. I know everyone and their mum is rooting for Blair and Chuck, and they had an awesome dynamic in the first series, but I just find them kind of repetitive and boring now, and the Nate/Blair thing never should’ve happened again (personally, I think they should’ve kept Nate in love with Serena for longer than they did. As an unrequited thing, because that dynamic was so, so good in the first series, the way Nate was so in love with his girlfriend’s bff. Also, I felt that it add another dimension to Blair and Serena’s relationship).
Having said that, the one canon het pairing I totally back in this show? Rufus/Lily. Their history and the epicness of their love trials continues to make me flail around and clap like a seal for more. I do think the ~long lost son~ is a pretty dumb plotline though. I thought it was good originally, but I think they should’ve had her abort, but OPPS, I forgot, the ~a word~ is still a dirty one as far as cable shows go. Again though, I think it would’ve added a great layer to their relationship, the intensity and the what-ifs, because as it is, they think their other son died and just kind of moved on? It’s silly. The abortion angle would’ve made for a great intensity within the show, and I like the thought of a young Lily trying desperately to forget about Rufus and the abortion being in a way her letting go of that wide-eyed girl we saw in the “Valley Girls” ep, and leaving the clinic the hbic we see in the rest of the season. ANYWAY. I may or may not be writing a fic entitled ‘5 Times Rufus Humphry’s said he loved Lily Rhodes (and the one time she said it back)’ and kind of really enjoying writing it.
Plus, I know it's pretty much been shot down in flames, but I really hope the spin-off gets picked up. I enjoyed the 'Valley Girls' episode a lot, and it'll be an awesome show if it can pull off Lily evolving from the little girl to a strong, manipulative and intelligent woman. Besides, I really want to see Lily as Rufus' muse, because I love that sort of shit.
Also? Serena's dad in "Valley Girls"? So attractive.
Okay, back to assignments.
