Only men could come up with a sport as tormenting as golf

There was something in the air. Of course it was hot and dry and not much prospered in the air except for insects and light polution, but there was something there, nonetheless. The demon had noticed it more than a week ago, and it seemed to be getting stronger ( Read more... )

Aziraphale's clothing had changed a bit in his time here as well. He looked rather like a perpetual tourist, with plaid shorts and socks that he pulled up to halfway up his calves. He was also wearing a floppy hat. It kept the sun out of his eyes.

He watched the ducks suspiciously as he approached, making sure that Crowley wasn't harming any of them.

The ducks were perfectly fine, or as fine as they could be feasting on bread that hippies in a commune wouldn't even touch.

"Was wondering when you'd show," he said without turning.*

*He had a feeling of what he'd see, and he didn't relish it. At least he'd gotten used to cordouroy and tartan.

"I have a customer," Aziraphale said morosely.

"It's too hot here," he added. "Remind you of home?"

"It's nothing like London, angel," he purred, at least having the manners to look at him beside him. "Although those clothes ae quite the torment."

"They're comfortable," Aziraphale protested, straightening his hat. "You're the one wearing black leather in the middle of the desert."

"Yes," he hissed softly. "And I look good. It might be a different situation if I did those mundane things like sweat.* But I didn't call you to talk about garb. Have you been out of your shop lately?"

*Without expressly meaning to.

"You think you look good," Aziraphale muttered, pushing his glasses up on his nose, then cleared his throat and regarded Crowley evenly. "Yes. I do get out."

"Do you have any idea what is going on?" he asked directly, pulling his dark glasses down hi nose so he could look at the angel directly. "I've been sitting in my car listening to Chopin, and I've gotten no directives from the head office."

Then he added, "It must be your people."

Aziraphale frowned. "I thought it was yours. There's something bad in the air."

"You have such a penchant for understatement, Aziraphale. Tch. If it's not us...it can only be Them. Would you agree?"

"Well I don't like being kept out of the loop," Aziraphale huffed. "You'd think they didn't trust us anymore!"

"Right. My side isn't big on trust, yeah? Not exactly in our make-up. Then, ther's always the whole debacle of losing that boy and your smashing argument...Don't trust us? It's a wonder," Crowley chuckled, hissing once or twice as he forgot himself.

Aziraphale bristled. "Well I am certainly trustworthy. I'm an angel. And I'm sure that if there's something bad in the air, it has nothing to do with my side anyway."

"You've gone native," Crowley pointed out, reaching into his pocket for his cigarette case. "I have, too. Don't get so upset."

Aziraphale eyed the cigarette admonishingly and then said, "I could use a drink."

Crowley blinked at him. The angel so rarely suggested it first, he ws out of practice at responding.

However, he wasn't completely daft. And a drink did sound good.

"Where would you like to go?"
